OpenVMS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OpenVMS (Open Virtual Memory System or just VMS) is the name of a high-end computer server operating system that runs on the VAX and Alpha family of computers developed by Digital Equipment Corporation of Maynard, Massachusetts (now owned by Hewlett-Packard), and more recently on Hewlett-Packard systems built around Intel Itanium CPU.
In 1994, with the release of OpenVMS version 6.1, feature (and version number) parity between the VAX and Alpha variants was achieved.
Since then, several companies producing OpenVMS software have made their products available under the same terms, such as Process Software and MVP Systems.

OpenVMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ), Part 1/5
OpenVMS, originally called VMS (Virtual Memory System), was first conceived in 1976 as a new operating system for the then-new, 32-bit, virtual memory line of computers, eventually named VAX (Virtual Address eXtension).
Because there are assumptions that some of the stability of OpenVMS arises from the stability of the underlying VAX and Alpha hardware, and systems based on components such as ISA and random memory SIMMs might not be as stable.
This configures the OpenVMS TDF settings, though it may or may not configure the TDF and the timezone rules needed or used by other software packages.

If OpenVMS is profitable, where's the money going?
What we have today is a state where OpenVMS is in danger of becoming a proprietary operating system that only the vendors know how to operate.
That roadmap survived the transition from Digital to Compaq because the OpenVMS division is largely autonomous.
It might be a quantum shift from the kind of minimalist advertising that HP often uses, where several glossy pages have just a few words in small print, but this educational style of advertising is essential if the message is to properly reach the reader.

OpenVMS - High Time HP Sold it ?
Make no mistake, OpenVMS has features that IBM systems still cannot match, and I am sure that IBM would take advantage of them, and it is not scared of proprietary operating systems.
It might be almost as old as Unix but OpenVMS is no lumbering dinosaur, not when it can continue to run rings around Unix, Linux and Windows for security and clustering - which brings OpenVMS a whole range of advantages that others can't match, not even the IBM behemoths.
Unlike the transition from Vax to Alpha, these changes would be relatively simple because as part of the move from Alpha to Itanium, changes have been made to reduce the effort of working with processor dependencies.

OpenVMS survives and thrives - Computerworld
Labeled passe by analysts and "legacy" by Windows and Unix enthusiasts in the wake of the distributed computing boom of the '90s, it hardly merits a mention in the computer press.
One of the perceived drawbacks contributing to the aura of doom around OpenVMS was the operating system's tie to expensive proprietary hardware -- first VAX, then Alpha.
"The OpenVMS APIs are so correct architecturally that the operating system has not required substantial change since its original design in 1977," says Bob Gezelter, a software consultant in New York who has tested the new system.
