Opteron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Opteron approach to multi-processing is not the same as standard symmetric multiprocessing as instead of having one bank of memory for all CPUs, each CPU has its own memory.
In a variety of computing benchmarks, the Opteron architecture has demonstrated better multi-processor scaling than the Intel Xeon.
The first capability is notable because at the time of Opteron's introduction, the only other 64-bit processor architecture marketed with 32-bit x86 compatibility (Intel's Itanium) ran x86 legacy-applications only with significant speed degradation.

 PCWorld.com - AMD Ships Opteron
While Opteron isn't expected to compete directly with Intel's 64-bit Itanium chips, which are based on a new explicitly parallel instruction computing (EPIC) architecture, AMD nonetheless took some shots at its biggest rival.
Likely early adopters for Opteron include companies in the life sciences and industrial fields, such as pharmaceutical manufacturers, biology researchers, automobile makers, and petroleum firms, said IBM executive Dave Turek, head of the company's newly formed Deep Computing unit.
NEW YORK -- After nearly a year of hype and development, Advanced Micro Devices has set loose its new 64-bit Opteron processors, designed to attract buyers who seek the power advantages of 64-bit computing but are leery of the costs involved in adopting other 64-bit architectures.

 AMD: Customers Want 64-Bit Computing
AMD is hoping the Opteron's lower cost-of-entry will attact users who want to run compute- or memory-intensive applications like enterprise resource planning or database management solutions but can't afford to scrap their existing x86 infrastructure, which is predominantly based on 32-bit computing.
AMD called Opteron the world's first 64-bit processor compatible with Intel's industry-standard x86 architecture, and with the highest performing 2-way and 4-way processor for servers.
And with Microsoft's next-generation Windows Server 2003 slated for the launching pad later this week, IT buyers will have even lower entry points in order to take advantage of computing performance that was once reserved only for mainframes.
