IBM PC compatible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
IBM PC compatible refers to a class of computers which make up the vast majority of smaller computers (microcomputers) on the market today.
The original IBM PC is long forgotten and the term PC compatible is not used.
Although the IBM PC was designed for expandability, the designers could not anticipate the hardware developments of the '80s.

Panasonic Sr. Partner; the newest contender in the IBM PC compatible portable competition.
Like many other IBM PC compatibles, the Senior PArtner is based on the 16-bit Intel 8088 micrprocessor running at 4.77 MHz.
If you are considering purchasing a portable (make that transportable) IBM PC compatible computer, consider the Panasonic Senior Partner.
Compatbility with IBM PC software is another question.

Acorn Gaming: Emulation - IBM PC compatible
Not strictly an emulator at all, this is the (complex, clever) frontend software which allows the PC card that can be fitted to Risc PC computers to be run in a window on RISC OS - or in fact, at all.
It does do quite a lot of emulation, however, since the hardware the PC expects isn't actually present and so this program has to pretend.
A range of PC cards with different processors were available, but new Risc PC cards are no longer sold.

 Encyclopedia: 640k barrier
For much of the time that Microsoft operating systems have dominated business computing, it has been a given that all computers based on Intel x86 family CPUs were IBM PC Compatibles.
Note that it is neither a limitation of the PC compatible nor of MS-DOS itself, but only the combination of the two.
To maintain compatibility with older software, the 640K barrier remained part of the PC design even after the 8088 had been replaced with the Intel 286 processor, which could address up to 16MB of memory.

 Legal Documents
Because personal computers are actually computer systems, they are made up of many components, each of which must be technically compatible with the others for the system to function properly.
Second, barriers to effective entry into the PC operating system market are high, and other PC operating systems cannot easily increase their shares of that market because the huge stock of applications written for Windows 95/98 will not run on those systems.
The great majority of operating systems installed on PCs are installed on new machines by OEMs.7 The Page 12 OEM stage of the PC industry is competitive, as indicated by the large number of computer makers, thin profit margins, and the absence of a dominant firm.8 24.Both businesses and households purchase PCs.

A personal computer is an inexpensive microcomputer, originally designed to be used by only one person at a time, and which is IBM PC compatible - (though in common usage it may sometimes refer to non-compatible machines).
Despite the overwhelming popularity of the personal computer, a number of non IBM PC compatible microcomputers (sometimes also generically called Personal Computers) are still popular in niche uses.
During the 1990s, the power of personal computers increased radically, blurring the formerly sharp distinction between personal computers and multi-user computers such as mainframes.
