PCMCIA - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The PCMCIA is the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, an industry trade association that creates standards for notebook computer peripheral devices.
The initialism "PCMCIA" was jokingly expanded as "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms".
The PCMCIA has developed a replacement for the present CardBus standard, called ExpressCard (originally codenamed Newcard), which is claimed to be faster and less complex than CardBus.

 PCMCIA Cards
Socket Services is the software interface between the card in the socket and the adapter to the computer's bus.
PCMCIA cards give you universal expansion capability for mobile computers, and can support a variety of functions including wireline and radio-based fax and modem capabilities, mass storage, and memory extension for host machines.
The PCMCIA card is plugged into a host socket/adapter on the computer's motherboard or connected to its expansion bus.

 PC Card FAQ
PCMCIA and the Plug and Play Association also co-sponsor "PlugFest" interoperability workshops, designed to bring together card, host and software developers to test their products together and resolve compatibility issues in a dynamic, open environment.
PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) is a non-profit trade association and standards body that promotes PC Card technology along with Miniature Card and SmartMedia cards by defining technical standards and educating the market.
With the continuing cooperation of the over 450 members of PCMCIA, PC Card technology is evolving as an industry-wide form factor, virtually assuring continued growth.

 PCMCIA Primer
On a technical level, a detailed understanding of the PCMCIA standard is required as well as a good understanding of the various implementations (both hardware and software) of the installed base.
In pursuit of an industry standard, the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) was formed by several card manufacturers in the late 1980s to define the card's physical design, computer socket design, electrical interface, and associated software.
Many people already involved in expansion cards for computers have seen the PCMCIA standard as an opportunity to expand their product lines to include the rapidly growing portable computer market.

 About PCMCIA
PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association) is an international standards body and trade association with over 200 member companies that was founded in 1989 to establish standards for Integrated Circuit cards and to promote interchangeability among mobile computers where ruggedness, low power, and small size were critical.
By 1991, PCMCIA had defined an I/O interface for the same 68 pin connector initially used for memory cards.
Also, PCMCIA will be publishing the SmartMedia Card Standard which already provides memory solutions in one of the smallest modular peripheral form factors today.

 Making Sense of PCMCIA
Often the manufacturer of your computer bundles the PCMCIA software with the system, and will be your best source of support.
Each adapter in the computer can control one or more slots, and a computer may have more than one adapter.
In order to work, you must have the correct Socket Services driver for your computer system; if you don't have a PCMCIA Socket Services driver, you should contact the vendor of your computer or a PCMCIA system software vendor to see what is available.

PCMCIA floppy interface cards The PCMCIA floppy interface used in the Compaq Aero and a few other laptops is not yet supported by this package.
PCMCIA devices are dynamically configured, so, for example, interrupts are allocated as needed, rather than specifically assigned to particular cards or sockets.
Several PCMCIA module parameters affect PCI interrupt routing: pcmcia_core module: cb_pci_irq=n This option specifies one interrupt number to be used to program the PCI interrupt router for all CardBus sockets that do not already have an interrupt assignment.

PCMCIA is short for Personal Memory Card International Association
Device independent drivers are software drivers that are either programmed into the chips of the PC card or that come on compact discs or floppy disks to be installed on the operating system.
PCMCIA cards can perform memory or I/O functions as long as they adhere to the PCMCIA interface structure.
PCMCIA provides only very little performance improvement over ISA, and is not nearly as fast as o

Synchrotech: How to Install PCMCIA PC Cards
Most PCMCIA cards also come with PCMCIA card and service software, so be careful; DO NOT install the card and service software if your computer already has it installed.
This allows your computer to configure its PCMCIA socket and recognize the PCMCIA cards that are plugged in to it.
If your computer does not have PCMCIA software you can either contact your computers manufacture to see what they recommend or install the card services software provided with most PCMCIA cards.

This can be useful when copying a software image on the PCMCIA Flash card of a router or switch (source) which is to be used for another router or switch (target) of a different platform.
Unlike Flash memory modules installed directly on the mainboard of the router, multiple PCMCIA Flash devices do not coalesce into one contiguous block of memory.
In some cases, you might need to insert a new PCMCIA Flash memory card and load images or back up configuration files onto it.

Based in Sunnyvale, California, the PCMCIA's specifications for the PC Card enabled the computer industry to manufacture credit-card-sized removable cards to add RAM, modems, network adapters, hard disks, and even radio devices like pagers and global positioning systems to portable computers.
Many people call PC Cards by the longer name PCMCIA cards.
The association has trademarked the term PC Card, however, so that's the preferred usage.
