PDP-10 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The PDP-10 was a computer manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) from the late 1960s on; the name stands for "Programmed Data Processor model 10".
It was the machine that made time-sharing common; it looms large in hacker folklore because of its adoption in the 1970s by many university computing facilities and research labs, the most notable of which were MIT's AI Lab and Project MAC, Stanford's SAIL, and Carnegie Mellon University.

 PDP Planet
PDP Planet is a portal into the Paul Allen collection of Digital Equipment Corporation mainframes and minicomputers, where pride of place is given to two PDP-10 systems (a 2065 running the Tops-10 operating system, and a 1090 scheduled to be brought up later this year).
PDP Planet also fulfills my hope that the achievements of early computer engineers aren't lost to time.
These will be available through the PDP Planet Web site, as will descriptions of the work done in restoring the hardware to working condition, and recommendations for how others can leverage our restoration work for their own projects.

7.1 Entries placed in either the To-10 or To-11 queue are placed there in consecutive 8-bit bytes in the format: first: a byte count - a count of all the bytes in the entry including the byte count.
When there are To-10 queue entries to read, the -10 would set EPTTBP = some buffer area and set the byte count in the DTE20 to initiate a transfer to -10 memory.
This will be incremented once for each doorbell sent to the 10 to insure that the 10 has not missed a doorbell and therefore failed to notice a status change in the -11 28-35 TO11IC To-11 interrupt count - a count of the doorbell interrupts sent to the -11.

In early DEC documentation, plural form "PDPs" is used as a generic term for all DEC computers.
A major benefit over FORTRAN and other higher level languages that were written for the PDP where you are restricted to the functions provided in the language.
Everyone (the government and DEC's stockholders included) knew that computers were big and expensive and needed a computer center and a large staff; DEC chose to avoid dealing with these stereotypes by entirely avoiding the term "computer"; thus, for over a decade, all digital computers sold by DEC were called Programmed Data Processors (PDPs).

The 10 was eventually eclipsed by the VAX machines (descendants of the PDP-11) when DEC recognized that the 10 and VAX product lines were competing with each other and decided to concentrate its software development effort on the more profitable VAX.
It looms large in hacker folklore because of its adoption in the mid-1970s by many university computing facilities and research labs, including the MIT AI Lab, Stanford, and CMU.
Some aspects of the instruction set (most notably the bit-field instructions) are still considered unsurpassed.

Walton, in particular, devised a theory of guaranteed real-time time-sharing that was not put into practice (as far as I know) until perhaps 10 years later on the PDP-11/34 and 11/70, with our (DCIEM and Andyne Computing Ltd.) MASCOT modifications to the UNIX kernel.
Users were guaranteed a response to an interrupt within 10 msec, and usually got it within 2 msec (all in-core, there was no swapping), with as many as 10 real-time users.
On the normal PDP-9, the user had to use a minimum of 8K because of the ADSS monitor, but on the 9T, the user could be as small as 2K, which was plenty for many experiments.

Finally, the PEP may provide a Last PDP Address object in its Client-Open message specifying the last PDP (for the given client- type) for which it is still caching decisions since its last reboot.
The PDP simply performs a byte-wise comparison on the value in this object with respect to the handle object values of other currently installed requests.
Additionally, the remote PDP may request that all the PEP's internal state be resynchronized (all previously installed requests are to be reissued) by sending a Synchronize State message.

But WMU's 10 was certainly not the last character-oriented host, so the work it took to put them on the network probably paid off when UNIX and other hosts starting getting connected.

For starters, the PDP-10 is also known as the DECsystem 10 and the DECsystem 20.
Other notes about the PDP-10, are that it very frequently had other PDP systems acting as slave I/O processors.
