 LINGUIST List 7.860: palatal nasals
SUMMARY: palatal nasals A while ago I asked for examples of languages with word-final palatal nasals that contrast with alveolar and velar nasals.
I think similar phenomena occur in other Nilotic languages: for instance, in Shilluk, _kyEN_ 'horse' (where _E_ is IPA epsilon and _N_ is the palatal nasal), and in Dinka-Nuer, but I'm not as conversant with them.
Speaking of which, Diffloth's proto-Waic has contrastive palatal nasal endings, which is based on similar finals being found in many modern Wa (and other ?) Mon-Khmer languages.

Nasal consonant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the case of some Kru languages, for example, nasal consonants only occur before nasal vowels.
For the purposes of acoustic description they are generally considered sonorants, but in many languages they may develop from or into plosives.
When this is claimed, as with several of the Western Kru languages of Liberia, or the Pirahã language of the Amazon, nasal and non-nasal consonants usually alternate allophonically, and it is only a theoretical claim on the part of the individual linguist that the nasal version is not the basic form of the consonant.

The velar nasal [η] in the ZR romanization is spelled as gn (as used in Classical Latin and Greek) instead of "ng" to avoid orthographic ambiguity when following an syllable without a consonant final (ka + nge = kange, ambiguous; ka + gne = kagne, unambiguous).

This happens in some languages because of the context, so it doesn’t make any difference.
This is an interesting sound, apart from being a distinctive phoneme in many languages, it is a nasal consonant.
Perhaps the sound occurs because of an assimilatory process called ‘assimilation of the articulation point’, that is, the [j] following the [n] makes the latter assimilate the [j] articulation point, that is, palatal, thus making it a palatalized nasal [nʲ] which phonetically is the same as the palatal nasal [ɲ].
