Pentium Pro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pentium Pro (P6) core featured an array of advanced RISC technologies, here used for the first time in an x86 CPU.
In multiprocessor configurations, Pentium Pro's integrated cache skyrocketed performance in comparison to architectures which had each CPU sharing a central cache.
Additionally, unlike motherboard-based cache which shared the main system bus with the CPU, the Pentium Pro's cache had its own backside bus (called dual independent bus by Intel).

Pentium 4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As is traditional with Intel's flagship chips, the Pentium 4 also came in a low-end Celeron version (often referred to as Celeron 4) and a high-end Xeon version intended for SMP configurations.
As a result, the Pentium 4's introduction was met with mixed reviews: Developers disliked the Pentium 4, as it posed a new set of code optimization rules.
The design was mostly identical to Pentium 4 (to the extent that it would run in the same motherboards), but differed by an added 2 MB of Level 3 cache.

Pentium II - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Intel reverted to the more usual format of placing the processor on the mainboard with the Pentium III but continued the practice of selling essentially similar chips with small and large cache sizes, with the L2 cache moved onto the die itself.
This larger package was a compromise allowing Intel to separate the secondary cache from the processor while still keeping it on a closely coupled bus.
However, the lack of the off-die L2 cache allowed for more fexibility with overclocking (the missing L2 cache was more sensitive to overclocking than the main chip).

 Pentium Pro - Computing Reference - eLook.org
The Pentium Pro is optimised for 32-bit software and runs 16-bit software slower than the original Pentium.
The original 0.35 micron versions of the Pentium Pro released on 1995-11-01 run at 150 and 166 Mhz for desktop machines and up to 200 Mhz for servers.
(Known as "P6" during development) Intel's successor to the Pentium processor, in development Jan 1995, generally available 1995-11-01.

 Define Pentium - a Whatis.com definition
The Pentium is a widely-used personal computer microprocessor from the Intel Corporation.
In addition to the microprocessor, the Pentium Pro includes another microchip containing cache memory that, being closer to the processor than the computer's main memory (RAM), speeds up computer operation.
First offered in 1993, the Pentium quickly replaced Intel's 486 microprocessor as the microchip-of-choice in manufacturing a personal computer.

 Tweak3D.net - Intel Reviews
The Pentium II was optimized for both 32-bit and 16-bit software and once again users were delighted that their applications and games ran at peak performance.
This was because the Pentium Pro was optimized for 32-bit instructions.
With the Pentium 4 already released, there will ultimately be changes in the hardware and software industry.

 Intel Pentium II ("Klamath")
The slot 1 interface designed for the Pentium II was patented by Intel, all but assuring that the other two companies would not use it for their new CPUs.
The Pentium Pro was optimized for 32-bit processing, meaning that it did not deal with 16-bit code quite as well.
Information began to leak out that Intel was "abandoning" the Pentium Pro design in favor of something that did not have an integrated secondary cache, and from there the guessing games began as to what Intel would come up with.

Pentium Pro Inside: I. A Treecode at 430 Gigaflops on ASCI Red, II. Price/Performance of $50/Mflop on Loki and Hyglac
The simulations were performed on two 16 Pentium Pro processor Beowulf-class computers (Loki and Hyglac) constructed entirely from commodity personal computer technology, at a cost of roughly $50k each in September, 1996.
We can compare Loki to the results obtained on 16 nodes of the ASCI Red system (Janus, which incidentally is binary compatible with Loki at the object file level).
We obtain optimal performance on the Pentium Pro processor by decomposing the reciprocal square root function required for a gravitational interaction into a table lookup, Chebychev polynomial interpolation, and Newton-Raphson iteration, using the algorithm of Karp [

 [No title]
I'll never forget when Intel first announced that the name for the successor to the 486 would be "Pentium." I and most of my fellow computer nerds thought the name was silly and not suitably geeky.
In fact, Intel's decision to make enormous sacrifices of performance, power consumption, and cost for the sake of maintaining the Pentium's backwards compatibility with legacy x86 code was probably the most strategically-important decision that the company has ever made.
Everyone knew that computer components were supposed to have names with numbers in them; after all, Star Wars droids, Star Trek ships, software versions, Compuserve e-mail addresses, and every other kind of computer-related thing you could think of had a moniker consisting of some mix of numbers and letters.

The implementation of Dynamic Execution of the Pentium Pro processor are shown in the following block diagram including cache and memory interfaces.
Dynamic Execution Technology can be summarized as optimally adjusting instruction execution by predicting program flow, having the ability to speculatively execute instructions in any order, and then analyzing the program’s dataflow graph to choose the best order to execute the instruction.
