 Definition of Power Mac G5
This processor is the first to implement 64-bit technology.
The PowerPC G5 (called the PowerPC 970 FX by its manufacturer, IBM) is based upon IBM's Power4 processor architecture.
Power Mac G5 The Power Mac G5 is Apple Computer 's name for models of the Power Mac which utilize the PowerPC G5 processor.

 PowerPC 970
In computing, the PowerPC 970 and the PowerPC 970FX, also known as PowerPC G5, are 64-bit processors in the PowerPC family from IBM, which was introduced in 2002.
Since then, the PowerPC 970FX has replaced the PowerPC 970 in all of Apple's G5 computers.
In keeping with its previous naming conventions, Apple Computer termed the PowerPC 970 the G5 in an announcement in June, 2003.

 Review Spot - Apple Power Mac G5 Desktop M9032LL/A (Dual 2.0-GHz PowerPC G5, 512 MB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD-R/CD-RW ...
But hey, of those, one person gave it a bad review because a third party vendor's software didn't work on the computer.
Another negative review was based upon apples overblown marketing, and not the performance or craftsmanship of the computer, which leaves one negative review due to faulty customer service.
Driven by not one but two 2 GHz Power PC G5 processors, 512 MB ultra-fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory per processor (expandable to a gargantuan 8 GB!), and an ATI RADEON 9600 Pro graphics card with 64 MB DDR SDRAM video memory, the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A certainly seems impressive.

Apple and IBM Introduce the PowerPC G5 Processor
The next generation PowerPC architecture is based on a completely new execution core that features massively parallel computation for an unprecedented 215 in-flight instructions, full symmetric multi-processing, two double precision floating point units and an optimized Velocity Engine(TM).
Made possible by IBM's industry-leading, state-of-the-art process technology, the PowerPC G5 provides creative professionals with unrivaled 64-bit compute power, while also running 32-bit applications natively.
Based on IBM's industry leading POWER architecture, the new PowerPC G5 processor has been optimized for personal computers and is at the heart of Apple's newly announced Power Mac(R) G5, the world's fastest desktop computer.

 Apple - PowerPC G5 - Execution Core
What’s more, on the G5 round-off occurs just once in the computation of T, while on other processors, round-off occurs twice, both in the computation of U, and in the computation of V, so fused multiply add can deliver a more accurate result.
Within the brains of the PowerPC G5 is more processing power than you’ve ever experienced from a desktop chip.
This efficient group-tracking scheme enables the PowerPC G5 to manage an unusually large number of instructions & flight”: 20 instructions in each of the five dispatch groups and an additional 100-plus instructions in the various fetch, decode and queue stages.

Apple (UK and Ireland) - PowerPC G5
Theoretically, the 64-bit data paths let the PowerPC G5 access up to 4 terabytes of physical memory.
And to get at that data, the PowerPC G5 features an industry-leading 1.25GHz frontside bus for each processor, offering a staggering 20GBps throughput on dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 systems.
Apple collaborated with IBM to leverage this industry-leading design for the G5, combining an optimised Velocity Engine with a new superscalar, superpipelined execution core that supports more than 200 simultaneous in-flight instructions.

 PowerPC G5 redux The Register
Apple may, for example, be unwilling to risk any of the consumer backlash that might arise from claiming a G4-class processor (Apollo) is a G5, which most experienced Mac users - ie.
To do so, Motorola said it would employ a new chip design and a shift toward silicon-on-insulator chip construction technology.
The other being, of course, what processor will they use?

The issues being corrected appear to be typical for those of any chip in such an early development stage, but this suggests that earlier reports of a faster than expected release of the G5 will not come to be.
For the next 5 years the most popular operating system will be windows 2000/xp/*, but some day people will realize that things has changed and more people will be using another operating systems and hardware solutions than the traditional intel/windows solutions.

IBM: PowerPC G5 to Go Mobile
IBM's PowerPC 970 family of microprocessors has quietly become a rarity in the computing world: a one-size-fits-all architecture used for notebooks, desktops and even low-end servers.
According to officials of IBM Corp., the technology for a notebook version of the PowerPC G5, a k a the PowerPC 970 series of processors, may be at hand.
But Mac professionals, and even Linux programmers, will be waiting for word of a mobile version.

 3GHz PowerPC G5 Eludes IBM
The PowerPC chips that IBM supplies to Apple Computer Inc. are slower than Apple expected, and Nvidia Corp.'s GeForce 6800 card has yet to ship in appreciable quantities.
Even the most ingenious chip designs can be undone by manufacturing problems: Consider IBM Corp.'s struggle to raise the megahertz ante for its PowerPC processors.
IBM's yields are, of course, a secret, and IBM executives declined to divulge specifics.

Motorola completes 1.6GHz PowerPC G5 The Register
The G5 will sport a 400MHz frontside bus - like Intel's Pentium 4, though its performance could be limited by whatever memory technology Apple connects to it across the system bus.
The longer pipeline and additional instruction units will account for a lot of it, but we also wonder if the chip will feature a built-in memory manager, something Motorola has been talking about of late.
Speaking of which, we hear work is progressing on a new chipset, designed for the G5, which will support up to 16GB of DDR SDRAM.

PowerPC G5 enters ‘volume production’ – source The Register
Certainly Cisco has already committed itself to basing future router products on the PowerPC 7450 - aka G4 - so there's no reason why it won't be keen on the G4's successor.
The machines will all ship with DDR SDRAM memory, a "much faster" frontside bus and Gigawire.
Presumably depending on the yields demonstrated over the coming weeks, the low-end box will go into production on 14 December, followed by the mid-range machine in 20 December.

MacCentral: Will blackout affect G5 production?
The biggest blackout in U.S. history on Thursday affected the Northeast, Midwest and parts of Canada, including IBM's computer chip fabrication plant in East Fishkill, N.Y. The result could be a delay in the shipping of Apple's Power Mac G5, according to an eWeek article.
The East Fishkill plant is a foundry for IBM's PowerPC G5 chip, which is used in the G5 line.
With power restored on Friday afternoon, IBM engineers were bringing up the tooling equipment and preparing to begin production, IBM spokesman Bill O'Leary told eWeek.
