Topic: Primary Domain Controller

 Definition of Primary Domain Controller
A domain is a concept used in NT server operating systems whereby a user may be granted access to a number of computer resources with the use of a single username and password combination.
PDC has been faithfully recreated on the Samba emulation of Microsoft's SMB client/server system.
The BDC computers have a copy of this database, but these copies are only read-only.

domain controller - a Whatis.com definition - see also: PDC, BDC, backup domain controller, primary domain controller
Primary domain controller (PDC) and backup domain controller (BDC) are roles that can be assigned to a server in a network of computers that use the Windows NT operating system.
In Windows NT, a domain combines some of the advantages of a workgroup (a group of users who exchange access to each others' resources on different computers) and a directory (a group of users who are managed centrally by an administrator).
One server, known as the primary domain controller, manages the master user database for the domain.

Managing and Configuring Windows 2000 Domain Controllers
After a computer is upgraded to Windows 2000 and promoted to a domain controller, the NETLOGON share and its contents are moved to a new location known as SYSVOL that is part of an automatically replicated folder structure that is replicated amongst domain controllers in the same domain.
After the domain controller promotion process (Dcpromo.exe) is run on a domain controller, you are unable to change the computer name.

Upromote Upgrade to a Domain Controller
A domain is a larger collection of computers where access to files and printers is controlled by the domain controller.
The result is indistinguishable from a domain controller created using the Microsoft setup procedure.

Is a Primary Domain controller required?
When you configure the Win2000 server to be a PDC, you're essentially promoting a peer to be the one that performs and organizes centralized network functions such as user authentications, group policies, printer sharing, etc. Deploying an Access application has little to do with these network functions.
Workstations are optimized to run user applications while servers are optimized to, well, serve files.
I would like to tell him no, we are not configuring the server as the PDC, just configure the router according.

NOTE : It may be necessary to delete the Netlogon.chg file on the PDC and allow it to be re-created by the computer at restart.
This error message indicates that the operating system is attempting to work with the SAM database and the Netlogon.chg files, both of which may be corrupted and inaccessible based on the behavior described in this article.
The registry size limit needs to be increased so that the Netlogon.chg file can be properly used by the operating system.

How to Configure Samba 2.2 as a Primary Domain Controller
Type in the samba server's domain name (or any other domain known to exist, but bear in mind that the user will be authenticated against this domain and profiles downloaded from it, if that domain logon server supports it), user name and user's password.
Hence, a Windows 9x client is never a true member of a domain because it does not possess a machine trust account, and thus has no shared secret with the domain controller.
Windows NT If the machine trust account was created manually, on the Identification Changes menu enter the domain name, but do not check the box "Create a Computer Account in the Domain." In this case, the existing machine trust account is used to join the machine to the domain.

Linux Networking: Samba as a primary domain controller...
The distributed version of Samba can't be a PDC.
Authenticating users is something that the distributed versions can do, it's domain logins that they can't do.
For PDC funtionality you need one of developmental versions of Samba.

OpenBSD - Samba file and printer sharing with MS Windows
As my environments is OpenBSD/Samba joining an existing Windows NT Primary Domain Controller (PDC) I need to maintain authentication on one server to minimise work-load.
Samba allows you to share Unix resources with SMB Clients (in many cases MS Windows clients.) This significantly simplifies client access to OpenBSD printing and file resources.
If you do not have a smb.conf to work with, then you can copy an example from the source distribution as below for editing.

 Windows NT4 Workgroup versus Domain
For example, it is possible to use NT4 Server as simple Workgroup networking, which maybe a good solution in small networks.
Everytime, a user needs to be validated, it is done using the local User Database.
A " Backup Domain Controller " is entitled to handle security validations (checking Username and password for Logon and for accessing to Shared data), so the workload of security validations is distributed to multiple Domain Controllers.
