PROJECT GUTENBERG OFFICIAL HOME SITE - HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY -
Project Gutenberg began in 1971 when Michael Hart was given an operator's account with $100,000,000 of computer time in it by the operators of the Xerox Sigma V mainframe at the Materials Research Lab at the University of Illinois.
The Project Gutenberg Philosophy is to make information, books and other materials available to the general public in forms a vast majority of the computers, programs and people can easily read, use, quote, and search.
The major point of all this is that years from now Project Gutenberg Etexts are still going to be viable, but program after program, and operating system after operating system are going to go the way of the dinosaur, as will all those pieces of hardware running them.

 Project Gutenberg Progresses
The Future of PG Hart based the Project Gutenberg concept on the premise that electronic data stored in a computer can be reproduced indefinitely—any number of copies can be made.
This was the start of Project Gutenberg (PG), an ambitious effort to develop a free public library of 10,000 public-domain e-books.
He now says: "The future mission of Project Gutenberg is to create 10 million e-books and translate them into 100 different languages for 15 percent of the world." Here's an example of how he ends his e-mails:

So, now, in efforts to create a wider availability of languages on the Internet, we are cooperating with Project Runeberg, the Gutenberg Projekt-DE and the other Etext operations working in the public domain, to bring wider language selections to a wider audience around the world.
First, two new languages are introduced, Swedish and Danish, and an introduction to Etext from Project Runeberg, the very first Project Project Gutenberg spin-off, which started 7 years ago.
Why did the introduction take so long, as with the Gutenberg Projekt-DE [we are also going to introduce you to them] many Etext projects wanted the opportunity to make it on their own.

Friedrich Schlegel's wife, Dorothea, was the author of an unfinished romance, Florentin (180,), a Sammlung romantischer Dichtungen des Mittelalters (2 vols., 1804), a version of Lother und Maller (1805), and a translation of Madame de Staël's Corinne (1807-1808)--all of which were issued under her husband's name.
