QNX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of QNX's first widespread uses was in the non-embedded world, when it was selected as the operating system for the Ontario education system's own computer design, the Unisys ICON.
QNX 4 made porting Unix software much easier and removed many of the quirks of the earlier version.
Over the years QNX was used mostly for "larger" projects, as its 44k kernel was too large to fit inside the single-chip computers of the era.

 QNX goes "Linux-like"
QNX apparently intends to be an active participant in any embedded and real-time Linux standards efforts that may develop, and also as a contributor to the open source utilities and tools support for Linux.
Obviously, QNX is attempting to rationalize their desire to keep the innards of their proprietary -- and finely tuned -- Neutrino microkernel secret, and free from what they perceive as the uncontrolled and uncontrollable world of open-source software evolution.
Founded in 1980, QNX Software Systems is a leader in realtime, microkernel OS technology.

QNX: Faster than Windows or Linux, with a gorgeous interface
QNX can replace Windows as your PC's only operating system -- a bad idea for most users, as I'll explain shortly -- or it can coexist with Windows on the same computer.
QNX computer operating system: Faster than Windows or Linux, with a gorgeous interface
QNX Neutrino isn't like Windows at all -- a good thing, if you're tired of the Looney Tunes way Windows was designed -- and it is much easier to use than Linux.

QNX opens Neutrino RTOS source code The Register
QNX's tactic, like Apple's, is to protect its core technologies by becoming sufficiently open to attract developers who like the flexibility of the open source model but need a more structured development environment than the chaotic Linux world provides.
QNX's play for dominance centres on making its technology more accessible than its rivals', and in the Linux era, that means opening portions of the code.
And since QNX uses the same APIs as Linux, such as Posix and X Windows, it hopes to encourage developers who have experience with the open source OS to shift over to Neutrino.

How QNX Failed The Amiga :: osViews osOpinion :: Tech Opinions for the People, by the People
QNX was a significant player in the embedded industry and had a reputation for efficient, real-time systems that oversaw everything from medicine drips to auto-assembly robots.
Enter QNX Software Systems, contracted by Gateway in 1997 to create a desktop operating system based on its embedded QNX Neutrino micro-kernel environment.
QNX balked at this, insisting its primary focus must be QNX Neutrino first, and Amiga's desktop second.

Unlike conventional RTOS solutions, which require expertise in OS configuration, the QNX Neutrino x86 runtime kit can auto-detect an x86 system’s hardware, allowing vendors or end-users to install system software without intimate knowledge of OS internals.
OTTAWA, July 12, 2005 — Thanks to the new QNX® Neutrino® x86 runtime kit, value-added resellers, independent software vendors, and system integrators can, for the first time, deploy their software on a hard realtime operating system (RTOS) without encountering complex installation issues or time-consuming licensing agreements.

But where Linux was designed to run on standard PC hardware, QNX is what's known as a real-time operating system: super-fast and small enough to be embedded in devices on a computer memory chip.
It's called QNX, and it comes from privately held QNX Software Systems Ltd. (www.qnx.com) of Kanata, Ont. Like Linux, QNX is a derivative of the UNIX operating system developed in the 1970s by what was then AT&T Bell Labs.
