IBM 305 RAMAC- The First Computer with a Hard Disk Drive in 1956
IBM introduced the 305 RAMAC computer on September 13th, 1956, which was the first computer to include a disk drive named the IBM 350 Disk File.

The capacity of the computer was around 220 megabytes (yes megabytes, not gigabytes) took the space of two large refrigerators and weighed in at a hefty 2,000 pounds.
This revolutionary computer was the first to use a hard disk drive.
I would think that the value is at least $400 plus.

Matthew G. Kirschenbaum: An Excerpt from Mechanisms [2]: "Professor RAMAC"
You don't exactly make the claim that RAMAC is an "evolution" of the early, purely-calculating computer, but you suggest this when you mention the evolution of computers into new media databases.
This was fundamentally different from the strips of punched paper and magnetic tape that then dominated computer storage.
The RAMAC, by contrast, represented what was perhaps the first digital library.

The basic 650 is a stored program, magnetic drum computer with logical ability.
Information stored on magnetic tape also can be processed against information stored on random access magnetic disks for the automatic preparation on the 407 accounting machine of reports involving data from both sources.
The IBM RAMAC 650 electronic data processing system combines the capabilities of the world's most widely-used computer with the flexibility of random-sequence data availability.

RAMAC (which stood for random access method of accounting and control) was the world's first computer disk storage system, developed by IBM engineers in San Jose and introduced in 1957.
RAMAC (pronounced RAY-mac; IBM does not spell out the initials) is a multiple-disk storage subsystem from IBM that emphasizes fault-tolerance and is intended for large enterprises.
RAMAC also uses multilevel caching to improve performance and it uses predictive failure analysis to identify potential disk failures.

 COMPUTING MACHINES
The world's first hard disk memory storage device was IBM's 350 RAMAC Disk File (Random Access Method of Accounting and Controlling), first offered in September, 1956.
At the end of 1999, it was possible to buy a 50-gigabyte (50 billion bytes) hard disk for less than $1,600.

The future of magnetic data storage technology
Figure 1 shows the areal density versus time since the original IBM RAMAC* brought disk storage to computing.
An engineer from the original RAMAC project of 1956 would have no problem understanding a description of a modern disk drive.
Improvements in areal density have been the chief driving force behind the historic improvement in hard disk storage cost.

While its total capacity was only 5 megabytes, its "random access" mechanism that could move the head to any track on any disk in a second or less gave it a performance edge over larger-capacity magnetic tape drives.
In a data storage world dominated by paper and magnetic tape and punch cards, RAMAC was the world's first commercial hard-disk drive.
But since 1991, when IBM introduced a number of advanced features, the annual areal density improvement has doubled to a phenomenal 60 percent.

IBM To Add Remote Copy Function To Ramac Storage
But while IBM has offered such a function for its Ramac 3 storage product, that unit has only four channels.
BM plans to deliver technology by the end of the summer that will add remote copy capability to its Ramac Virtual Array mainframe storage product.
IBM's PPRC (peer-to-peer remote copy) function on the RVA works with server-based Geoplex hardware and software; when it detects a problem on the primary server, it freezes data on the backup server so corrupt data can't be mirrored on the RVA.

 Disk drives take eventful spin
But now, for the first time, self-acting slider bearings made it possible to have a head for each disk surface; it was no longer necessary to move heads up and down to reach different disks.
In 1961, having joined IBM right out of school 10 years earlier, Alan F. Shugart took over a project called the Advanced Disc File which, like its parent, the RAMAC 350, packed fifty 24-inch disks.
The drives bore the Telex nameplate and they helped Telex grow rapidly to become a major supplier of disk drives, tape drives and printers, all compatible with IBM computers.

IBM will change the products' names to IBM Ramac Virtual Array Storage, IBM Ramac Scalable Array Storage and IBM Ramac Electronic Array Storage.
