Topic: Reading (activity)

 Past Issues - July/August 1999
Pre-reading activity requires considerable time, but that time is a wise and critical investment, for it prepares students to actively engage with the text.
By knowing what students bring to their reading, teachers can provide them with bridges, or scaffolds, between the given and the new-clarifying unfamiliar vocabulary and concepts, and offering other necessary information in the process.
To avoid feeling that they have to stop teaching content in order to teach reading, secondary teachers might think of reading as a comprehension or understanding process that involves three stages.

Guided Reading in the Primary Classroom
Guided reading is one component of a four-block reading program, developed by Pat Cunningham and Dottie Hall, which consists of self-selected reading, shared reading, writing, and working with words.
The teacher helps students learn to use reading strategies, such as context clues, letter and sound knowledge, and syntax or word structure, as they read a text or book that is unfamiliar to them.
Teachers should choose books that are easy enough for independent reading, meet the instructional goals for the group, and are interesting and motivating to students.

 Reading Activity
Level:  Novice to Advanced reading on multiple levels.
Teaching/Learning Objectives:  To teach reading comprehension, focusing on the five steps of effective reading:  pre-reading, scanning, intensive reading, and comprehension.
Analysis:  I find this exercise highly beneficial because it provides practice and information than this, however, it provides exposure to grammar and sentence structure; the idea of ‘input’ is in effect here, meaning that by reading properly written Spanish, students will gain a better understanding of how to write it properly.

 ESL Reading Activity
The students will read with a purpose (intensive reading) and they will have reviewed aspects of grammar when generating the 10 questions since these have to be well formulated for the other student to understand and answer them.
Adaptations can be made by grading the level of the books to read but the structure of the activity can remain exactly the same.
Once they are done with this stage, they will have to share their questions with another student that read the same particular book, and will have to answer those questions on paper which in turn could be turned in to the teacher as evaluation.

English Language Arts 20: Teaching and Learning
A pre-reading activity with the focus on arousing interest in a text and getting students started reading will be different from one with the focus on establishing a common understanding about the main idea or technique employed in a text.
Other strategies for students while they are reading include encouraging them to make marginal noes on a selection, to underline key words and ideas, to outline and map key ideas, to summarize, or to retell the selection to a partner.
In order to grow as readers and deepen their understanding of the texts they are reading, students need many opportunities to think about, talk about, and write about the texts they are reading.
