 Romaji Flavor - Jeffrey's J<->E Dictionary
Romaji is used in this server not to map Japanese to English (or any other language), but to merely map it to an encoding which most systems in the world can handle.
Unfortunately, students (and teachers) often use romaji as a crutch to escape the ``difficult task'' of learning kana, and find using spaces makes this crutch easier.
In general Japanese is written without spaces, so in theory, romaji should have no spaces as well.

 Japan Forum - Romaji - A plague?
Big surprise in our first class of part 2, no more romaji and now I have to play catch-up on learning the Kana.
I dont mind it myself, its a good starting point to learn the pronounciation of the language, nothing more than that.
My Japanese teacher used Romaji in the begining so I ignored the Hiragana figuring why learn it.

Romaji (ローマ字) is the Roman-letter representation of the Japanese language.
Because Japanese contains many homonyms, and to avoid redundancy and inconsistency, the romaji entries are merely links to the various Japanese-language entries that can be represented by the roman-letter character sequence that makes up the entry title.

 Glossary - Jeffrey's J<->E Dictionary
When first exposed to kanji and what is obviously a more complex writing system than most, an obvious question is why have kanji at all.
Sometimes romaji refers to the specific transliteration following one of the standards, and sometimes romaji is used sloppily to refer to the general rough-and-tumble make-it-look-English (or German, or whatnot) representation.
Kanji is both the English word, and the romaji for the Japanese ``"kanji" in Japanese'', which is generally translated as ``Chinese Character''.

 JIS Keyboard Support in Mac OS 8
This is possible because keyboard layouts are now handled by key-remap resources and responsibility for specifying how Japanese characters are typed (Kana or Romaji) now lies with the input method.
As if this weren't confusing enough, most input methods bypassed the Keyboard control panel altogether and implemented their own Kana and Romaji settings.
In addition to user interface consolidation and refinements, the new control panel hides keyboard-layout resources for two-byte scripts from the user.

Three of the most popular standards are Kunrei (the "official" system - the government wants everyone to use this system, but...), Hepburn (the most popularly used system, also known as the Hyoujun system, or the "standard" system), and the Nihon-shiki system.
These variations are used in different places, and no one Romaji system is followed...
There is also the westernised romaji, where the double vowels are dropped to make it easier for westerners to read.

 Rōmaji - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Since it does not have any of the advantages for non-native speakers of Japanese that the other romaji systems have, and the Japanese already have a writing system for their language, JSL does not enjoy much wide usage outside of the educational environment.
In addition to the standardized systems above, one can see many other romanizations.
Rōmaji sōdan shitsu (in Japanese) contains an extremely extensive and accurate collection of materials relating to romaji, including standards documents and even HTML versions of Hepburn's original dictionaries.

 www.ianbennett.net :: Scripts
This is useful as those who cannot decipher the symbols of Kana and Kanji can read Romaji.
Use this converter by inserting the text (in either Kana or Romaji form) into the text area, choosing which way to convert, and selecting whether to strip the spaces from the result (truly the Japanese language has no spaces but they are added sometimes - especially in Romaji - to make it easier to read).
Notes: If you convert text and not all of it is converted, then the unconverted parts must either not be Katakana or use a symbol with a different code (in a Kana > Romaji conversion) or do not have an equivalent Katakana symbol (in a Romaji > Kana conversion).

 Romaji : Romanji
There are a number of different romanization systems in use, including the common Hepburn and Monbusho[?] systems.
Japanese may be written in Romaji for many reasons: street signs for visiting foreigners; transcription of personal, company, or place names to be used in another language context; dictionaries and textbooks for learners of the language; or even simply for typographic emphasis.
In English, the word is usually used to refer specifically to the writing of the Japanese language in Roman characters as opposed to the usual mix of kanji and kana.

Either way, there should be a rule for it.
This is, however, obviously not really working in conjunction with the idea to have the romaji titles in lower ASCII, when it comes to long vowels.
I'm in favor of using "n", because to me, it feels awkward to have a single "m" in romaji, while the pronounciation-shift could still be derived from seeing 'n' + next letter.
