The Scientific Data System 900-9000 series consists of the SDS 910, 920, 925, 930, 940, 945, and 9300 computers.
The 910 and 920 were designed at the same time as a planned series of compatible computers which spanned a range of performance.
The SDS 930 was used at the University of California (Berkeley) as the base machine for the design of the Berkeley Time Sharing System (Chap.

 CHAC SDS 930 Rescue
The CHAC took over this computer in operating order, with cabling, schematics, full docs, bales of parts, and complete software on tape....still warm, so to speak.
So far as we're concerned, this is the last known, complete, running, SDS computer in the world.
But it's also (did we mention?) the last known, complete, running, XDS or SDS computer, in the world.

 Tymshare
SDS delivered the machine but had not improved the software from Berkeley to the extent that we had.
Tymshare took the software from Berkeley, several releases, actually, and began to develop it for commercial use.
A group there had started with an SDS 930 computer with several attached model 33 Teletypes.

 NLS
NLS was designed around a Scientific Data Systems SDS 940 time-sharing computer with an approximately 96 MB storage disk.
The NLS system was the first to employ the practical use of hypertext links, the mouse (co-invented by Engelbart and colleague Bill English), raster-scan video monitors, information organized by relevance, screen windowing, computer presentation (such as PowerPoint), and other modern computing concepts.
It could support up to 16 workstations, which were composed of a raster-scan monitor, a three-button mouse, and a device known as a chord keyset.

 Phil's PDP10 Miscellany Page
An offshoot of the Project Genie was the Berkeley Computer Company (1968-1970), whose BCC 500 featured SDS 940 compatibility.
Many BCC people were hired by Xerox'es Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), where the first computer they built was MAXC, a PDP-10 clone.
Project Genie (1964-1969) at the University of California, Berkeley was funded by ARPA (contract SD-185) to produce a timesharing system.

 SDS-940 Simulator Configuration
Scientific Data Systems of El Segundo, California, produced a line of 24-bit computers in the early and mid 1960's.
Project Genie at the University of California Berkeley modified the SDS 930 to increase its memory address capability and add support for timesharing.
The Project Genie timesharing system provided many of the seminal ideas for Tenex and thus TOPS-20.
