 The SWTPC. SOUTH WEST TECHNICAL PRODUCTS M6800
SWTPC used these chips to design a computer that was simpler to build and program than the Altair design, and cost much less to manufacture.
SWTPC eventually withdrew completely from the "hobbyist" market, and only built business machines and special purpose computers that were used in point-of-sale systems and other commercial applications.
When you first looked at the SWTPC 6800 Computer System, you noticed it was completely unlike the Altair or IMSAI computers.

Instead of using the S-100 bus which had become standard on many other computers, SwTPC utilized their own bus, the SS-50 bus, as seen above, with only 50 connections instead of 100.

In microcomputers, SWTPC's 6800 and 6809 machines used TSC's FLEX disk operating system, Radio Shack's TRS-80 machines used TRS-DOS, their Color Computer used OS-9, and most of the Intel 8080 based machines from IMSAI, MITS (makers of the legendary Altair 8800), Cromemco, North Star, etc used the CP/M-80 disk operating system.
PC-DOS/MS-DOS (and CP/M) The best known family of operating systems named "DOS" is that running on IBM PCs type hardware using the Intel CPUs or their compatible cousins from other makers.

The SWTPC 6800 is an eight-bit general purpose mainframe with a total memory capacity of up to 48K bytes of RAM, ROM, EPROM or a combination of the three.
The assembled systems are available with 4K, 8K, or 40K memory.

The SWTPC 6800 was the first computer system made by The SouthWest Technical Products Corporation and the first based on the Motorola 6800 microprocessor.
Before manufacturing computers, SWTPC sold home audio kits and a kind of computer terminal called "Television Typewriter".
User had to buy an additional terminal to enter information, and thus a ROM monitor allowed him to examine and modify memory, load/save programs on tape or boot from a floppy disc unit.

Data would be clocked into that data port from the SWTPC and a byte written to the control register to indicate the data is valid.
The HC11 might read the data and acknowledge by writing a byte to its control register.
The board is designed using readily available junkbox components.

 MIKBUG Replacement for SWTPC 6800
This allows the MIKBUG ROM in a SWTPC 6800 Computer MP-A Microprocessor system board to be replaced with a different monitor such as SWTBUG.
It also has a routine that will boot floppy disk such a SWTPC MF-68 or my DC-5 controller.
The MIKBUG ROM Emulator board replaces the MCM6830 ROM with a 2716 EPROM.

 SWTPc S/09
The SWTPc S/09 was a continuation of SWTPc's 6800 and 6809 series SS-50 bus machines.
This particular machine also has the S-BUG monitor version 1.8 installed, as well as a DC5 floppy controller, made by Michael Holley in 2001.
Other SWTPc 6809-based machines, the 69/A and 69/K, could only address 56k of RAM.

I cut my teeth on the SWTPC 6800, moved to 6809 then 68000 (Amigas).

I vaguely remember building a simple speech recognition board for the SWTPC and some software using Z-crossing based on an article that I read somewhere (I think it was Kilobaud).
Notes: I've been playing with computers since about 1969 or so.
My brother, as a ham radio and electronics nut, built a SouthWest Technical Products Company (SWTPC) 6800-based microcomputer around 1975 and we both played with software for it.

I've included the SWTBUG monitor program at $E000 and I re-origined the I/O devices to $8000 in accordance with the original 6800 SWTPC.
The SWTBUG listing I got off Michael Holley's SWTPC web site http://www.swtpc.com The ACIA now sites at $8004, timer at $8000 (It does not do anything) and 4 x 8 bit port at $8008 / $800C.

 Re: Oh my god, Google has a USENET archive going back to 1981!
Wire-wrapped from xerox'd original SWTPc schematics (only problem was that the schematics weren't always correct, took a while to figure out why the floppy controller didn't work :-).
Never went beyond FLEX and a pair of floppies though, and cheated by buying a second hand SWTPc ct82 terminal (that's 82x16 on a 9 inch crt).
Still have my SWTPc clone built around -83.
