Safari (web browser) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Safari is a web browser developed by Apple Computer, Inc. and available as part of its Mac OS X operating system.
Safari uses Apple's brushed metal user interface, has a bookmark management scheme that functions like the iTunes jukebox software, is integrated with Apple's QuickTime multimedia technology, and features a tabbed-browsing interface similar to that of Mozilla.

Apple's Safari Browser Is Hard to Close
I've noticed that Safari does have a problem when I'm adding information to certain types of text fields, depending on how the page is designed, and because bug reports are so easy to file, I haven't hesitated to let the Apple engineers know.
Overall, I think the beta version of Safari is strong.
The exciting news was that Apple correctly identified the primary use of a computer today (browsing the web), and the three most important elements of that experience (speed, accurate rendering, and bookmarks/navigation).

Jeffrey Zeldman Presents: The Daily Report
Safari identifies itself as Mozilla/Gecko, which could create as many problems for the browser detection crowd as Opera’s tendency to identify itself as Explorer unless the user tells it to do otherwise.
Safari even managed to handle the Flash Satay object embedding method that sometimes fails in IE/Win.
The site should be usable in any browser or device, though advanced features may only be available in fully compliant, graphical browsers.

The Seattle Times: Business & Technology: Worthy rivals take on quirky Safari browser
But there's a lot of room in the browser space because Safari remains idiosyncratic: It's Apple's specific idea of what needs to be in a browser and how a browser should work.
The reason to switch from Safari has to involve some of the particular features that each browser adds, such as better password support.
On the baseline, all browsers are more robust than ever before with pop-up ad blockers and (except Opera) tabbed windows.

 Surfin' Safari
Browsers are trying to make information easier to manage with smarter bookmarking systems and page management capabilities (tabs), and news readers are emerging that (in effect) push new information to you in as it's posted and allow you to switch rapidly between different information sets as well.
Meanwhile, I've heard credible rumors that Apple, while it was working on Safari, filed Bugzilla evangelism bugs so that the Standards Evangelists at Netscape (of which I'm one) would get the sites to fix their code to work with Gecko and other standards-compliant browsers.
Had we released a browser with a UA string that did not superficially match either MSIE or Gecko, users would have downloaded Safari and experienced many malfunctioning Web sites.

Blocking stylesheet rules from Safari Holovaty.com
That browser has several huge positioning bugs that have swiftly become the bane of my design existence.
I've been playing around with a new site design and KHTML is my biggest problem at the moment, its got to the stage where I'm considering server side user agent sniffing to provide a different style sheet to Konqueror - despite the problems with that approach.
So it's either a problem with Safari, or more likely, a problem with some client-detection scheme at Hotmail.

 Safari Developer FAQ
Safari has the features you'd expect of a modern browser plus a few unique ones; understanding these, as well as a few Safari development tricks, will ensure your pages work exactly the way you and your users expect.
Safari has implemented a pop-up window blocker in order to minimize the distracting pop-up windows many sites use for advertising.
Safari achieves much of its performance through efficient use of content caching.

OS X Odyssey 237 - Checking Out The Safari Browser
Safari's bookmark library is a single-window interface similar to Apple& popular iTunes and iPhoto application interfaces that makes organizing and managing bookmarks similar for folks who prefer that sort of interface environment.
However, Steve Jobs Expo Keynote calim that “Safari is the fastest browser on the Mac, and we predict that many will feel it is the best browser ever created,” is simply untrue in the first instance and unlikely in the second at this stage of Safari's development.
I found the Safari beta to be significantly slower than the Chimera/Mozilla/Netscape troika, lacking in some key features like tabbed browsing and the ability to save Web pages as plain text, and more than a little buggy.

Welcome to the browser jungle, Safari CNET News.com
While Safari amounts to another chip on Apple's shoulder, it represents a significant setback for Mozilla, the open-source browser development group funded by AOL Time Warner's Netscape unit that supplies the technology behind the Netscape browser, among others.
KHTML is a browser compliant with the World Wide Web Consortium’s HTML 4 recommendation and is designed for use with the K Desktop Environment (KDE).

 Daring Fireball: Safari
The number one goal for developing Safari was to create the fastest web browser on Mac OS X. When we were evaluating technologies over a year ago, KHTML and KJS stood out.
The big software news out of Macworld Expo is Safari, now officially released, albeit in the form of a public beta.
Safari does the same thing in the location text input field.

Why are Safari and Sherlock two different applications? (kottke.org)
It sounds like many people do lots of stuff on the web, that requires a browser, so that's open a lot, and being such bloatware as they are, then on a slow computer with not much memory, then to open anything else is a pain.
Even non-optimized browser interfaces to the tasks Sherlock addresses are adequate for most users.
I agree with meg that it's frustrating the conversation is so focused on backend limitations to jk's idea - but maybe it's a complement to kottke that so many programmers come here to read his ideas about what the UI should look like.

Apple adds features to Safari browser CNET News.com
Safari Beta 2 also allows users to import bookmarks from Netscape and Mozilla Web browsers and includes support for AppleScript, more standards compatibility and support for more languages such as Japanese, French and German.
Apple Computer on Monday released an updated test version of its Safari Web browser as part of its effort to distance its software environment from Microsoft's.
At the time of launch, analysts said Safari offered little challenge to Microsoft's browser dominance, but that the Mac maker could benefit enormously if it could wean itself from Internet Explorer.

Apple tries to top Microsoft by releasing its own browser / Safari aims to be simpler and faster than competition
Safari includes a shortcut to Google searches in its top-right corner, which also remembers recent queries.
Furthermore, Safari's underlying Web-rendering code is free for everyone else to use -- even Windows developers.
Mozilla's developers are thinking along the same lines; the next release of that software will be the last, after which they will focus their efforts on Firebird.

Apple updates Safari Web browser, adding tabbed windows
OS X is a superb multitasking operating system (able to do many things at the same time, in other words), but I suspect many users single-task their browsers -- by opening one window and then closing it before they open the next.
An easier way for most of us is to use the standard Safari keyboard modifiers for opening a Web page in a new window.
I encountered tabbed browsing the first time in Opera, the Scandinavian browser available for Windows, Linux and many other platforms besides the Mac.

Safari?s innovative features include Google search capabilities integrated directly into the toolbar; SnapBack, a new way to instantly snap back up to search results or the top level of any website after browsing down one or more levels; a completely new way to name, organize and present bookmarks; and automatic "pop-up" ad blocking.
As a consequence, the Mac OS X browser wars have just been raised to a new level.

MacNN Safari, Mozilla browser usage increases globally
Apple's Safari browser was third behind Microsoft IE (87.28%) and Mozilla (8.45%) and ahead of Netscape (1.11%) and Opera (1.09%), which were third and fourth, respectively.
Maybe it's not as common, but I think there are still a lot of mac users that use IE instead of Safari.
While I agree that I wish MacIE would just go away, there are some cases (such as my university) where it's left on all the computer lab machines, in addition to Safari.

Safari Bookmark Exporter 1.1 - MacUpdate
Safari Bookmark Exporter is designed to do one thing and do it well: export bookmarks from Safari (now isn't that intuitive?).
There shd be a way for the exporting to be done so that the receiving browser doesn't have its existing bookmarks erased.
Safari Bookmark Exporter supports the following browsers: Chimera/Camino (including the latest nightlies), Mozilla, Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox, Netscape, OmniWeb (any version including the latest betas of version 5), IE, iCab, and Opera (including the recently released 8.0 beta).

 Safari Enhancer 2.6.4 - MacUpdate
I use Safari as my preferred browser, but its always irked me that my bookmarks are all not listed alphabetically - unlike some of the other browsers that are available to Mac users.
It is however, greatly appreciated by the Mac community to have such developers create software such as this without cost to the end user.
: I downloaded Safari Enhancer because I was under the impression that selecting the menu item "Debug > User Agent > Windows MSIE 6.0" would trick websites that require you to be using Windows and Internet Explorer to think that you are using that.

 Apple Opens Safari Browser's WebKit
Apple's efforts to woo the open-source software community have taken another step forward with the announcement of the WebKit Open Source Project, which forms the core of its Safari browser for Mac OS X. Safari is based on KHTML, an open-source rendering engine used in the Konqueror browser and other projects.
However, in a posting on his Weblog, Dave Hyatt, one of Apple's leading Safari programmers, announced that the company was launching a new Web site dedicated to WebKit, as well as a mailing list and IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel for discussion of the code.
The move by Apple is likely to end a public spat between the computer maker and some members of the KHTML team over the lack of contribution back into KHTML from Safari.

Think Secret - Safari to get tabbed browsing (with images)
The lack of tabbed browsing is one of the few complaints that users have had about Safari, but Chimera's founding programmer, David Hyatt, is a lead Safari developer at Apple, so the addition of this feature is no great surprise.
This functionality was popularized by the Chimera Project, a Cocoa browser based on the Gecko engine.
Tabbed browsing enables users to peruse multiple Web sites in a single browser window, instead of taking up several windows.

The Safari browser delivers the best performance of PeopleSoft applications in the Mac OS X environment, allowing enterprise applications users to maximize productivity.
