Scientist - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Like other scientists, mathematicians start with hunches and then conduct symbolic or computational experiments to test them.
Von Neumann, Turing, Khinchin, Markov and Wiener, all mathematicians, made major contributions to science and probability theory, including the ideas behind computers and some of the foundations of statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics.
However the nature of the mind and human thought still remain mysteries.

Boston.com / News / World / Researchers create first robot scientist
Scientists who have seen the paper said that the system did not represent a major advance in either robotics or artificial intelligence, but rather a milestone in combining the two.
For human scientists, some of the most interesting discoveries happen when researchers notice something they weren't looking for and suddenly change course, said Stuart Schreiber, a Harvard professor who is one of the intellectual leaders in automating aspects of modern biology.
In biology, as in many sciences, automation has given scientists powerful tools to find masses of information, but not the tools to make sense of it all, a problem the new system is aimed at helping to solve.

BBC NEWS Science/Nature Robot scientist proves its worth
The researchers propose that a system like the robot scientist could be used in the field of genetic analysis, where, they claim, it would be faster than existing automated systems and more cost-effective.
Although existing scientific knowledge was used to programme the computer system with possible hypotheses, it can then use this basic knowledge base to generate new ones based on its observations.
The process requires three computers to control and is driven by an intelligent software program that tries to explain observations in the experiments.
