NewsForge SeaMonkey Project picks up where halted Mozilla Suite left off
His apprehension to just switching to SeaMonkey at the time of the post, he wrote, was that it was still in beta testing, and he is not willing to trust his data with the beta version.
Although SeaMonkey version 1.0 will not deviate much from the last Mozilla supported version of the suite, the development team behind the project is looking to add many of the features currently available in Firefox and Thunderbird -- as well as some that are not.
Thomas said Mozilla also offers SeaMonkey tinderboxes -- machines that retrieve code from the CVS and compile it to help developers see where patches to the software have affected its other parts.

There is also a user and developer base that is fond of Seamonkey and would like to maintain it.
In 2003 we announced our intention to shift development focus from the integrated Mozilla Application Suite (commonly referred to as "Seamonkey") to a new generation of applications -- the Mozilla Firefox browser and the Mozilla Thunderbird mail and news client.
There will undoubtedly be some implementation details to be worked out (e.g., can we actually use Seamonkey as a formal trademark, how do we work the tinderbox machines, etc.).

On March 10, 2005, the Mozilla Foundation announced that they would not release any further official versions of the suite beyond 1.7.x, since they are now focused on the standalone applications Firefox and Thunderbird.
In effect, this means that the suite will still continue to be developed, but now by the SeaMonkey Council instead of the Mozilla Foundation.

The shift comes as Mozilla's Firefox has emerged as a viable rival to Microsoft's dominant Internet Explorer Web browsing software.
