Topic: Seek time

Seek time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Seek time is one of the several delays associated with reading or writing data on a computer's disk drive.
Seek time for a given disk varies depending on how far the head's destination is from its origin at the time of each read or write instruction; usually one discusses a disk's average seek time.
Floppy disk drives and optical drives (such as CD or DVD drives) have much larger head assemblies than hard discs, resulting in them having longer seek times.

 Seek Time
Seek time is almost entirely a function of the design and characteristics of the hard disk's actuator assembly.
Obviously, even small reductions in seek times can result in improvements in overall system performance, because the rest of the system is often sitting and waiting for the hard disk during this time.
It is for this reason that seek time is usually considered one of the most important hard disk performance specifications.

This suggests that it is 3, not 2, that is the magic number of computer disk average seek time!

Epinions.com - Size, seek time, rotation speed, mean time between failure
Latency is the time between when the computer requests a chunk of information and the first bit of it appears.
Mean time between failure is also an important parameter, but hard to find information about.
For hard drives, this is determined by two things: how long it takes to move the read head over to the track you need to read, and how long it takes the disk to spin around until the data you want is under the read head.

System and method for reducing seek time for read operations in mirrored DASD files - Patent 5463758
A direct access storage device is an information storage device in which access time to data is essentially independent of the location of the data.
Drive 0 may be moved toward or to a physically centered position by the seek distance or less.
The characteristic of independence in access time to data distinguishes direct access storage devices from serial storage devices such as tape drives.

 Access Time
In the end though, when you are looking at the ability of a drive to randomly position, access time is the number you want to look at.
When comparing drives of a given class, say, IDE/ATA 7200 RPM drives, they will all have the same latency, which means, of course that the only number to differentiate them is seek time.
However, it's important to remember that this wide range can occur on any given access, and random perturbations can affect benchmarks and other performance tests.

With traditional disk drives, access time is the composition of transfer time, seek time and rotational latency, so many techniques as to minimize these factors, such as ordering I/O requests or intelligently placing data, have been developed.
This paper begins to examine the access qualities of a MEMS-based storage device, and based on experimental simulation, develops an understanding of the seek time characteristics of such a device.
Therefore, new data layout techniques based on minimizing the unique seek time characteristics of a MEMS-based storage device can be developed.

Seek time is how fast the hard drive can find, or 'seek', data.
I have about 4 years on my IBM (7200 rpm) Deskstar, and am thinking about changing it with my next re-build.
I guess it would depend on the usage..seek time might be better for accesing lots of different files, while read write would come into play more when loading very large files such as video editing.
