IEEE-USA Position On "Copy Control Systems"
Copy protection should not be used to force consumers to purchase new, or to repair, maintain, or upgrade, computers or players to continue their past lawful uses of the Internet.
Business Models -- It should not be the purpose of a mandated copy control system to pick particular business or technology models, particularly in the way that software or hardware is developed, distributed, or used.
IEEE-USA also believes that consumers and other computer and content users must be encouraged to provide input throughout the development of any copy control system, and in particular before adoption as a requirement for future consumer electronics devices.

The computers are not configured, and need not be configured, to implement the system by placing codes on computer files.
Because the computers are not so configured, the computer peripherals that depend on the computers cannot rely on the computers to pass along or generate SCMS data, and there is therefore no complementary system with which to interact.
The dependence on a personal computer is not merely a question of needing the personal computer as the source of the matter being recorded.

Digital rights management - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DRM provisions have appeared in released versions of some subsystems of the Microsoft Windows operating system (e.g., Windows Media Player) and are scheduled in more as Palladium is implemented in currently planned, not yet released, versions of Microsoft Windows.
Digital rights management (DRM) is the umbrella term referring to any of several technologies used to enforce pre-defined policies controlling access to software, music, movies, or other digital data.
DRM is an acronym for Digital Rights Management, a broad term used to describe a number of techniques for restricting the free use and transfer of digital content.

 Hexapedia - Compact disc
The compact disc specification does not include any copy protection mechanism and discs can be easily duplicated or the contents "ripped" to a computer.
This approach is the subject of an evolutionary arms race or cat-and-mouse game — not all current drives fail, and copying software is being adapted to cope with these damaged data tracks.
The write laser of the CD burner changes the characteristics of the dye to allow the read laser of a standard CD player to see the data as it would an injection molded compact disc.

SCMS - Serial Copy Management System
This means you can make as many digital copies of your original DAT tapes as you like, but you cannot digitally make copies of any of those copies.
This applies only to digital copies, and is usually only heeded with consumer and some semi-pro machines.

If this were a real system, your data structure would be linked with an interpreter allowing the dictionary to be loaded with new words, queried, and listed out (in no particular order, for this exercise...).
Their current solution, implemented in DAT decks and home CD writers, is called SCMS (serial copy management system).
Depending on your software watermark, the order of the list should be different, but all other queries should continue to function normally.

Nearly all DVDs, since 1997, are protected from copying by using an encryption system called CSS (Contents Scramble System), which only allows for films to be viewed on players and computer drives equipped with licensed technology that permits the devices to decrypt and play (but not to copy) the films.
It should be noted that the Rio player cannot effect any transfer of MP3 files; instead, users must use the Rio Manager computer software provided to download the MP3 file from a computer's hard drive to the Rio itself via a parallel port cable that plugs the Rio into the computer.
Furthermore, any transmission reproduced indirectly must pass through a computer to reach the Rio. In other words, it appears that if a computer is involved at any stage of the reproduction or transmission activity of a technical device, AHRA cannot apply.

 The role of copy protection
Copy protection steps in as an impediment to casual copying in a technological environment where other barriers have slowly disappeared.
At the time DeCSS was first distributed, there was no way to play DVDs on Linux or Unix based operating systems; DeCSS allowed people though CSS does not limit non-movie uses of DVDs and the lack of secure copy protection may actually delay the widespread availability of DVD-R drives.
Copy protection schemes also seem to deliberately cripple technologies like DVD, disallowing patterns of use that consumers would enjoy.

Breaking Barriers to Popularize Internet Streaming Broadcast
The fact that computers are exempted from SCMS protection creates a controversial double standard, which means the copy protection just irritates the rule-abiding users and that SCMS is not effective at all against piracy.
For example, CD recordable (CD-R) and CD recordable/writeable (CD-RW) media for computer use are not required to pay the fee, while the consumer-music-type CD-R and CD-RW media are under the coverage of the system.
It is reported that the persons who invented the code-breaking program called DeCSS had no intention of piracy; they wanted to play the legal DVDs on their Linux computers.

The $199 Rio, itself not an inherently impressive audio device, is at the crux of this war---Diamond, a company known for aftermarket computer peripherals such as video accelerators and networking products, is treating the Rio as a new computer-data storage device; as such, it would enjoy fewer copy-protection restrictions.
Burger says that computers and peripherals are still governed by the copyright law, however, "even though the AHRA does not impose technological requirements on their manufacture." Burger recently submitted testimony regarding the injunction.
Computer-based CD recorders and DVD players have long been governed by copy-management rules different from those that regulate their consumer-electronics cousins, allowing fewer restrictions when copying files and backing up data.
