 shar from FOLDOC
The output of shar, known as a "shar file" or "sharchive", can be distributed to anyone running Unix, and no special unpacking software is required.
< tool, file format > ("Shell archive", after ar and tar) Any of the many Unix programs that creates a flatten ed representation of one or more files, with the unique property that it can be unflattened (the original files extracted) merely by feeding it through a standard Unix shell.
Some just uuencode each input file and output commands to uudecode the result, others include extensive checking to make sure the files have been transferred without corruption and that all parts of a multi-file sharchive have been unpacked.

This file can be editted by any text editor to reconstitute the original files, for those who do not have a Unix system or an Unshar program.
Most sequence file formats allow more than one sequence per file, but some do not.
E-mail davison@uh.edu Warning: Phylip format input is now supported (30Dec92), however the auto-detection of Phylip format is very probabilistic and messy, especially distinguishing sequential from interleaved versions.

DocuShare 2.1 Administration Guide Appendix A: File Format Filter Listing
DocuShare is able to index the content of documents that are stored in their native, non-text file format (e.g., Microsoft Word) by using filters to access the documentÂ’s content.
Instead, each file is converted when the first View request on that file occurs.
The list of file formats (called Mime Types) registered with DocuShare at installation time is shown in the table below, along with a listing of which formats it is able to index and which formats it is able to convert to HTML for viewing.

 The RADIANCE Picture File Format
The file format, like most binary files used by Radiance, contains an ASCII information header that is terminated by an empty line.
X * The input header (minus any format lines) is copied to fout X * if fout is not NULL.
This header typically begins with the line "#?RADIANCE", followd by the commands used to generate the file, along with variables indicating exposure, view parameters, and so on.

However, we will need a file format (the syntax) and I am sifting through many candidates.
The binary representation will be that implemented by Java portable binary stream data, i.e.
I would expect individual users for resource constrained platforms to develop formats optimized for space efficiency with lossy and perhaps loss-less compression such as the one described by Andrew Horner at this year's ICMC.

 NETLIB Index Format Guidelines
The netlib find command merely uses Unix grep to perform a keyword search of all the index files, but more sophisticated search engines can be constructed.
A "flat" list is unfortunate, but it appears that the author of a (somewhat) factorizable naming scheme can write a script to generate the index file more easily and with more certainty than outsiders can parse a more sophisticated index.
If all the files in a directory share a value, that line is moved up in the hierarchy to the directory entry in the parent index.

The worm searches all accessible disks from C: to Z: for files with the extensions.mdb,.doc,.xls,.sav,.jpg,.avi and.bmp and uses a random number generator to determine which files with these extensions should be deleted.
The worm may also create a file in the temporary system directory.
It also creates a mutex 'jmydoat name of infected computer Xmtx' to flag its presence in the system.
