Sinclair Research Ltd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the 1980s Sinclair entered the personal computer market with the ZX80 at £99.95, at the time the cheapest personal computer for sale in the UK.
In March 1981 "Sinclair Computers" was renamed to "Sinclair Research Ltd" and the Sinclair ZX81 was launched at £49.95 in kit form and £69.95 ready-built, by mail order.
Your Sinclair noted that it was "difficult to find a good word for Sinclair Research in the computer press".

After the 1986 takeover by Amstrad of Sinclair Research's computer business, the QL was quietly dropped.
On the Sinclair QL I continued to program in assembly (the QL BASIC (SuperBasic) was ok, but I wasn't interested), and I wrote various more-or-less useless programs (ranging from a FORTH compiler and an editor-assembler system of my own to Pac-Man to a MSDOS compatible floppy disk driver).

 Timex Sinclair 1000 computer
The first Sinclair computer was the ZX-80, released in 1980 for $200.00.
Unfortunately, this means it is no longer 100% software-compatible with the Spectrum computer which it was built upon.
In August 1982, Popular Science published an article about the Timex Sinclair computer.

Sinclair Research has offered the two machines at a discount and Centaur Project is hoping for similar generosity from software suppliers.
Most of the turnover is the result of the deal with Sinclair Research giving it exclusive distribution to retailers in Britain of the company's computers and software.
Prism Microproducts, the Sinclair Research main distributor in the U.K., has also won a contract for a series of exhibitions to help British microcomputer companies which produce hardware and software for Sinclair machines to enter the Chinese market.

 Planet Sinclair: Computers: ZX81
The ZX81, Sinclair's third computer, sparked a popular mania for computing following its launch in 1981.
More seriously for Sinclair, a flurry of rival computer manfacturers entered the market.
It seems strange these days, when shops selling computers are so ubiquitous, but back in 1981 there were very few shops selling computer equipment.

 Sinclair QL
Sinclair QL The Sinclair QL The QL was a personal computer introduced by Sinclair Research in 1984.
Third party hardware add-ons, software, and even some QL compatible computers started to appear in the rapidly growing QL market, giving more than reasonable tools to the users, and often repairing to some original QL's weaknesses, but it was already too late.
QL stands for Quantum Leap, as in the intentions of Sinclair it would have been a major leap in computer technology, offering tremendous power for a relatively small amount of money (399 pounds).

Sinclair Research has sold off its entire interest in the home computer business to Amstrad.
Sinclair Research remains as a "project development" company and its development work still includes the Pandora portable.
But if Amstrad decline, Sinclair Research are at liberty to find an alternative marketing solution but without the use of the Sinclair name.

Jean Piaget Society - Genetic Epistemologist
Hermina Sinclair de-Zwart, known in a more friendly fashion as Mimi, was an outstanding, classical-type, scholar allying deep knowledge of several disciplines (formally holding a degree in Linguistics, from Utrecht University, and a Ph.D. in Psychology, from Geneva University) with an original and path-breaking research mind.
She was a profoundly learned Piaget scholar whose own research was in developmental psycholinguistics and cognitive development.
Slowly, however, probably due to the synergy between the Paris and the early language acquisition work in Geneva, the relevance, both theoretical and empirical, of naturalistic data gained forcefulness in Mimi’s eyes and in early 1985 the idea of a project centered on the collection of naturalistic data of early language began to be mentioned.

Your Spectrum 02 - QL User
But that said, it's claimed that anyone proficient in Sinclair Basic should have no problem finding their way round SuperBasic; and the fact that the new language is fully procedure structured, extendable, and its execution speed is independent of program size, certainly seems to make the effort worthwhile.
As far as memory is concerned, Sinclair Research's new machine delivers the goods with 128K of internal RAM.
Although it was rumoured that the QL would contain 3¼-inch floppy disks, Sir Clive in fact has plumped for an upgraded ZX Microdrive as the means of creating extra storage for the device.

Sinclair User 51 - Sinclair bows out
Yet, following the announcement of the take-over of Sinclair Research's home computing interests by Amstrad, Sir Clive now looks certain to bow out of the market he was instrumental in creating.
Without his sub-£100 micros the Commodore 64 might still be £350 and Amstrad certainly wouldn't ever have become involved in home computers.
NO-ONE would question that Sir Clive Sinclair single-handedly created the British home computer market.

There are so many options open to us all the time, and we review them all the time, and that is a possibility.

Sam Coupe was launched in 1989 amongst much hype in the Sinclair computer mags of the day, and was seem by most to be the ideal upgrade from the ZX Spectrum.

 David Sinclair's Research Interests
Although significant advances have been made in computer Chess, there is still a long way to go in the development of "intelligent" search algorithms for computer games, particularly games of strategy.
In isolation, these formalisms will be of little practical value unless they are integrated into a design methodology that covers the complete development cycle from analysis, design, development and verification.

 CLIVE SINCLAIR - Definition
Sir Clive Sinclair (1939-) The British inventor who pioneered the home microcomputer market in the early 1980s, with the introduction of low-cost, easy to use 8-bit computers produced by his company, Sinclair Research.
Sir Clive also invented and produced a variety of electronic devices from the 1960s to 1990s, including pocket calculators (he marketed the first pocket calculator in the world), radios, and televisions.
Perhaps he is most famous (or some might say notorious) for his range electric vehicles, especially the Sinclair C5, introduced in 1985.

 Planet Sinclair: Vehicles: C5
Losses of up to £7 million eventually forced the company to sell its computer business to Amstrad.
Possibly Sinclair's most famous product (albeit for quite the wrong reasons), the ill-conceived C5 "electric car" proved to be the point at which Sinclair Research's wheels finally fell off.
In a country with dedicated bicycle paths, such as the Netherlands, this would have been much less of a problem, but crowded British roads were a very different environment.

Each different machine popped through the back-door has been modified to overcome certain inherent problems.
All of which, says our source, suggests that Sinclair Research is still changing the hardware.
In the race to produce hardware add-ons for the as yet unseen Sinclair QL and, of course, gain the distinct commercial advantage of being first, manufacturers are still falling over each other trying to get their hands on either a machine, or a detailed technical specification.
