Site Finder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Most notably, the Internet Software Consortium announced that it had produced a version of the BIND DNS software that could be configured by Internet service providers to filter out wildcard DNS from certain domains; this software was deployed by a number of ISPs.
This form of "typosquatting" technology has been criticized in purchasers of common misspellings of popular domain names as well as other technologies that redirect web traffic, causing web viewers to see unsolicited advertising.
If users of these applications accidentally entered a wrong host name, instead of a meaningful "host not found" error they would get a "request timed out" error, making it look like the server exists but is not responding.

The Deployment of VeriSign "Site Finder" and ISP Response
More formally, we will test the hypothesis that all Site Finder requests from a given network block are draws from the same distribution, against the alternative that the draws come from a distribution with a mean that drops during the course of the period studied.
With data from Alexa documenting two weeks of accesses to Site Finder by Alexa users, the authors analyzed the specific IP blocks (groups of computers) sending traffic to Site Finder as well as changes over time in such traffic.
In particular, when the user requests a web site or other content associated with a domain name, the user's computer queries the ISP's name server, which in turn queries the appropriate registry's name server.

The cranky user: The recent brouhaha with Site Finder
With Site Finder up, the correct information kept in the other databases -- such as NetInfo, NIS, or regular hardcoded hosts files -- was never found.
This allows users to filter all mail with invalid domains in the headers; this solution captures only a small percentage of spam, but it's very close to 100% reliable and substantially more accurate than nearly any other filter.
That means that any lookup of any IP address -- including the Web server that served you this page, or the machine you're reading it on -- will indicate that it's a known spam source.

Wired News: ISC to Cut Off Site Finder
VeriSign's controversial "typo-squatting" Site Finder service is about to be bypassed by an emergency software patch to many of the Internet's backbone computers.
Instead of generating errors, the spam filter checks are instead being rerouted to the Site Finder service, and therefore appear to originate from a legitimate domain.
Vixie said a lot of spam spoofs the "from" domain, and that many ISP-level spam filters check whether incoming e-mail is from a valid domain or not.

Unfortunately, Site Finder also happens to break many existing programs: all those that assume a missing hostname maps to an immediate error.
On September 15, 2003, VeriSign tweaked the.com and.net DNS registries so that every lookup for an unknown host resolved to a search service web site, Site Finder, rather than return the NXDOMAIN response traditionally associated with DNS lookup failures.

Now Icann has stepped into the fight and has asked Verisign to suspend Site Finder while it works out if the change is causing other net users to suffer.
The IAB point out that many ad hoc net management systems relied on the old error message system and Verisign has inconvenienced many on the net with its change.
In a related statement the Internet Architecture Board, which keeps an eye on the technical development of the net, said Verisign's change violates some of the founding principles of the net.

Macworld: News: ISC releases patch to block VeriSign's Site Finder
According to the Mountain View, Calif.-based VeriSign, Site Finder is a navigation tool that improves the users' Web browsing experience by directing users who mistype a Web address ending in.com or.net to its own search pages.
VeriSign spokesman Brian O'Shaughnessy said Site Finder is much like a service America Online Inc. and Microsoft Corp. already use to redirect mistyped queries.
The Internet Software Consortium (ISC), the nonprofit group that publishes BIND (Berkeley Internet Name Domain) software, which runs 80 percent of domain name servers, has released a patch that will block VeriSign Inc.'s new Site Finder service.

Typing in that name got Site Finder's suggestions for "earthlink.net" or "earthfind.com." Users can then type a search query just as they do at Google or browse through pre-selected categories.
But because AOL and Microsoft ultimately get information about ".com" and ".net" names from VeriSign's directory computers, VeriSign could intercept such queries and direct them to Site Finder.
Several Internet service providers, including America Online, already offer similar services for their customers, and Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser sometimes directs mistyped queries to its MSN search engine.

Responding to criticism from the IAB and others that Site Finder replaced error messages localized into the language of the Internet user with an English-only Web site, VeriSign questioned whether technical messages in a familiar language were more useful than the Site Finder tools in English.
ICANN said that Site Finder hobbled antispam filters and automated tools like Web spidering applications, and hampered the ability of some applications to determine whether or not an Internet domain existed.

It justifies Site Finder, which also offers corrected spellings of these queries, as a "powerful tool that improves Web navigation for users." But multiply those 20 million mistakes by per click ad revenue, and it quickly adds up to a petty penny earned for a government granted service.
