Topic: Slash (weblog system)

At the Forge - Weblogs and Slash
My main criticism of Slash, aside from issues having to do with distribution versions (which remain in CVS) and documentation, is the lack of a standard system for adding new functionality in the way that Xoops, OpenACS and Zope have done through their various modules and packages.
As often is the case with other Weblog and journal software, Slash makes it possible and easy to solicit comments from other users.
But, Slash was not designed for broad needs; rather, it tries to implement a limited set of functionality and to do it well.

 Engines 2000: Software
Slash is the Open Source software developed, used, and distributed by the immensely popular Slashdot web site (http://slashdot.org).
A design goal of the project is to integrate these tools with the Slash weblog code, so they can then be made available to all of the sites that use Slash.
It has been noted that most of the best computer programs were developed by individuals who needed a particular tool for a job they had to do, and built one to their own specifications.

This is understandable, since Slash community is smaller and such a task is not in the priorities of the OSDN people which do most of the development.
Once you start using Weblog software, moving your database to a different program is a difficult process, so it helps to choose well before you start.
There are numerous alternative Weblog systems that perform well in areas where Slash does poorly, among them PHPnuke, GeekLog, and Scoop.

Slashdot is, of course, the original community weblog: "a moderated list, in reverse-chronological order, of timely items, with links to further discussion on-site, or to further information off-site." [1].
What David, chromatic, and Brian have done here is write a manual for Slash, the open-source code that underlies Slashdot and dozens of other communities.
Aside from chapter 8, there's really nothing that can't be learned from reading the code (or asking good questions on the mailing lists or in the IRC channel), but that's a pretty daunting task.

The reason for such problems is that the file format was not compatible with your system in some way.

Another way to say it is that the ODF document is compatible across all of these different software systems.
