Some hackers actually go so far as to maintain, with a straight face (:-I), that words on a computer screen are different from words on paper--implying that writers of e-mail have nothing useful to learn from Dickens or Hemingway, and that time spent reading old books might be better spent coming up with new emoticons.
The very ambiguity that, properly used, gives words much of their expressive power is viewed by many Net denizens as a glaring but ineradicable flaw in an otherwise promising system.
In an earlier era, it would have ended up moldering away in a few libraries where no one would ever see it.

Smiley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The smiley has been used for the printable version of characters 1 and 2 (one "black," the other "white") on the default font on the IBM PC and successor compatible machines, though modern fonts for graphical user interfaces often don't include those characters.
"Smileys" is also the name of a gang in the Rockstar video game Manhunt.

George Smiley - encyclopedia article about George Smiley.
Smiley is an agent working for MI6, the British overseas intelligence agency.
Smiley is sometimes considered the anti-James Bond in the sense that Bond is an unrealistic figure who relies on gadgets and is more a portrayal of a male fantasy than a realistic government agent.
However, in 1947, with the onset of the Cold War, Smiley was asked to return to the Service, and in early 1951 moved into counter-intelligence work, where he will remain for the next decade.

NetLingo.com Dictionary of Internet Terms: Smileys, Emoticons, Japanese Smileys, Assicons, ASCII Art
A smiley is a sequence of characters on your computer keyboard.
Smileys usually follow after the punctuation (or in place of the punctuation) at the end of a sentence.
We consider these "straight-on smileys" as another form of ASCII ART: those in which you do not tilt your head but rather look at it straight on, such as @(*0*)@ for a koala.

(Smiley and Keehn, 1988)—Even so, during the crash when additional margin calls were issued, those investors who could not provide additional margin saw the brokers' sell their stock at whatever the market price was at the time and these forced sales helped drive prices even lower.
In the first half of 1929 margin requirements on customers' accounts averaged a 40 percent margin, and some houses raised their margins to 50 percent a few months before the crash.
The crash began on Monday, October 21, as the index of stock prices fell 3 points on the third-largest volume in the history of the New York Stock Exchange.
