Von Neumann architecture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IBM SSEC was a stored-program electromechanical computer and was publically demonstrated on January 27, 1948.
The ENIAC was modified to run as a stored-program computer and was demonstrated as such on September 16, 1948, running a program by Adele Goldstine for von Neumann.
For example, a desk calculator (in principle) is a fixed program computer.

Charles Babbage Institute: RESEARCH PROGRAM> Current research
More recently, parts of computer programs called upon repeatedly in the performance of greater or multiple tasks are referred to as “subroutines,” or simply as “procedures.” Subroutines minimize the duplication of code in a program—important where memory is scarce—and facilitate better structuring (qv).
Wilkes noted at the time that his design for the EDSAC stored program computer was based substantially on “principles expounded by J. Presper Eckert, Jr., John W. Mauchly, and others.” The EDSAC became the prototype for the LEO computer, another of the first commercial computers.
In 1945 J. Presper Eckert described the programming of the ENIAC computer in the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.

Such machines are therefore not stored program computers.
So although not strictly stored program computers, it can be argued that such machines recognised the importance of the concept, and found a way of implementing it within the technological constraints of the time without using the very expensive data memories of the time.
Theoretically it can be programmed to do anything computable.

 Stored Program/Software View
This is a very simple program in the C language that asks the user for two numbers, adds them, and prints the result.
But C is a compiled language, which means that in order for a computer to execute the algorithm described by this program, we need to convert it to machine language.
Now, although our C program doesn't say anything about a particular type of computer, creating an executable form of the program does require that it be translated into the proper machine language for whichever computer we are using.

 Stored-program Computers
Now universally known as compilers, these are programs that translate from a human-oriented expression of a program, in a combination of algebra and English-like phrases, into the machine-oriented order code of a given computer.
Somewhat later it was realised that the concept of a stored program would open up countless opportunities.
For example, in the years following Kilburn's first program, sophisticated program development aids were developed at Manchester and elsewhere.

 Stored-program computers - Computer
By storing the computer's program in its own memory it became possible to rapidly "jump" from one instruction to another based on the result of evaluating a condition defined within the program.
The Stored Program design defined by the von-Neumann Architecture finally allowed computers to readily exploit their general-purpose potential.
The Von Neumann architecture solved problems inherent in the design of the ENIAC, which was then under construction, by storing the machines program in its own memory.

A SQL stored procedure is one that's written in SQL, which is possible because of the recent extension of DB2 SQL to include statements that provide for control of the logic flow through a stored procedure program.
Because client-side stored procedures offer many of the same benefits as their server-side counterparts do: In particular, they offer a means of controlling and effectively managing data access logic in a distributed-systems environment.
When a SQL stored procedure is prepared for execution, a C-language program is generated under the covers and gets invoked when the stored procedure is called.
