 aptitude command line - why?
any specific reasons why synaptic was chosen as the default package manager for Ubuntu instead of aptitude (thus its including in the default system menus)?

Personally I like synaptic, it just work in an user-friendly way in my opinion, but a lot of people seems to use aptitude instead.

 Catch 22 gnucash MEPIS
I have been able to install gnucash - at least through the synaptic package system shows it as installed -both common and gnucash files, but now, and maybe this is a terribly newbie question, how do I run the program.
However I cannot install Gnucash, if i try to install (Using package manager or apt-get, it say i need to install gnucah common, and vice versa when i try to install gnucash-common first, see following errors
I lost guncash on my mac when I upgraded to Tiger and though I have the files backed up but useless without the program of course

For all the newbies (of which I count myself one), you might find it easier to add the multiverse repository and install the gstreamer plugins using the Synaptic package manager.
The gstreamer plugins package is part of “universe” which by default is not enabled.
Be sure you know what you do when you install stuff from universe/multiverse, since the quality of some of the packages is… well, not good.

cannot create thumbnails as it says that the gd2 library is missing.
