 Mainframes.com - Sysplex Overview
The MVS/ESA SYSPLEX has been available since 1990 when it was announced as a platform for an evolving large system computing environment.
A major difference between a SYSPLEX and a conventional large computer system is the improved growth potential and level of availability in a SYSPLEX.
A sysplex is the most recent development in the evolution of IBM large systems.

 Parallel Sysplex
A sysplex is IBM's systems complex (the word sysplex comes from the first part of the word system and the last part of the word complex), introduced in 1990 as a platform for the MVS/ESA operating system for IBM mainframe servers.
According to IBM, the Parallel Sysplex is the end result of IBM large systems' developments over the years, from the single system uniprocessor, to tightly-coupled multiprocessors, to loosely-coupled configurations, to the sysplex, and finally to the Parallel Sysplex.
The sysplex consists of the multiple computers (the systems) that make up the complex.

*Sysplex: IBM’s feature that provides the ability for one IBM computer to take over the processing of another IBM computer.
Additionally, the committee felt there was no business case for the necessity of Sysplex capability on the single computer scenario.

Cluster architectures and S/390 Parallel Sysplex scalability
In the shared-disk architecture, when a data block needed by a transaction is cached in the database buffer of another node, the data are typically obtained by writing the block to disk from the cache and reading the data from disk at the requesting node, as illustrated in Figure 6.
Although these advantages of the Parallel Sysplex are considerable for many environments, for some environments and workloads the other cluster architectures do offer appropriate solutions.
The coupling facility cache model is used to address the database buffer coherency issue, enabling each node in a sysplex to locally cache frequently referenced data items from globally shared databases.

 IBM eServer zSeries: Parallel Sysplex
The IBM z/OS Parallel Sysplex is able to deliver on these promises, providing a cost-effective, flexible computing platform without peer.
To accomplish all this, the z/OS Parallel Sysplex combines two critical capabilities: The first is parallel processing, and the second is enabling read/write data sharing across multiple systems with full data integrity.
With IBM's Parallel Sysplex technology, you can harness the power of up to 32 z/OS systems, yet make these systems behave like a single, logical computing facility.

"The shared-everything structure boils down to the idea that any work can be done anywhere in the Parallel Sysplex.
Promising to breathe new life into mainframe-based systems, IBM designed its Parallel Sysplex technology so customers could increase processing power without sacrificing their investment in legacy systems.
Available systems management tools, whether designed for the traditional mainframe-centric environment or for newer, distributed environments, do not adequately address the needs of the parallel processing world.

DB2 Version 4.1: Sysplex Data Sharing
Unlike IMS, the Sysplex implementation of DB2 supports caching of data in the Sysplex Coupling Facility; such caching is of interest primarily for data that is shared across the Sysplex and has a significant degree of update activity.
DB2 Version 4, which offers query IO and CPU parallelism, operates in the Sysplex environment.
The Sysplex Coupling Facility provides (1) cluster-wide data locking, at a low level of granularity, and (2) stable data caching for Sysplex-wide read/write data.

However, satisfaction with Sysplex (under the categories overhead, performance, availability, and value for money) averaged out at just above the zero level (0.1 to 0.3), suggesting that IBM has a harder task ahead in selling Sysplex to its larger users than it does in promoting CMOS-based systems generally.
It does show, though, that a number of questions still hang over the Parallel Sysplex, which is critical to IBM's long-term success at the top end of the market, and where it faces some tough competition from alternative technologies offered by the software-compatible vendors.
Sysplex-coupled mainframes are undoubtedly among the most highly available and powerful commercial systems on the market, and the Parallel Sysplex is synonymous with IBM's high-end strategy.
