Topic: TOGAF

::: Welcome to Scala Bmolsson Site:::
The TOGAF model is generic as well as reasonably comprehensive, and is an excellent way to describe system architectural components at the highest level.
TOGAF has its roots in the open-systems movement championed by the Open Group (an amalgam of the Open Software Foundation and X/Open), but does not predicate any specific technology.
Because of its open-systems pedigree, however, TOGAF promotes the development of architectures that ensure interoperability, scalability, and portability, all of which are key components in complex e-commerce projects.

Understand The Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF) and IT architecture in today's world
Originally designed as a way to develop the technology architecture for an organization, TOGAF has evolved into a methodology for analyzing the overall business architecture.
In other words, instead of helping you describe a particular Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) system, for example, TOGAF can help you decide whether SOA is right for the project at all.
Before discussing TOGAF, we should clarify a larger issue: the architect's role in software development.

Computerworld > Open architects turn attention fo enterprise
TOGAF defines an “architectural framework” as a method for designing a set of building blocks for an IT system and fitting them together."Open" is a word heard most often of late to describe particular platforms which oppose "proprietary" thinking.
Many of the large vendors, including IBM and HP, but with the significant exception of Microsoft, are participants in TOGAF, and have worked towards interoperability of some of their applications and systems software within the common framework.

TOGAF plays an important role in helping to "demystify" the architecture development process, enabling IT users to build genuinely open systems-based solutions to their business needs.
A framework provides "a taxonomy for relating the concepts that describe the real world to the concepts that describe an information system and its implementation." [3] One of the best- known examples of a framework is the Zachman Framework.

TOGAF and the Zachman Framework define a framework as a tool for thinking about the information that needs to be captured about an organization, to understand how everything works, and to enable the building of information systems that efficiently support the business.
The Zachman Framework is considered the granddaddy of frameworks, a reference framework against which others can position or map themselves.
It covers the four principal architecture domains of business, information systems (application and data), and technology infrastructure, and focuses strongly on the need for architecture to support business objectives and requirements.
