 TOP500 Supercomputer Sites
The TOP500 project was started in 1993 to provide a reliable basis for tracking and detecting trends in high-performance computing.
Twice a year, a list of the sites operating the 500 most powerful computer systems is assembled and released.
The Linpack benchmark can now be run using HPL, A Portable Implementation of the High-Performance Linpack Benchmark for Distributed-Memory Computers

 The Space Simulator Cluster
It achieved Linpack performance of 665.1 Gflops on 288 processors in October 2002, making it the 85th fastest computer in the world according to the TOP500 list.
This improved Linpack performance to 757.1 Gflop/s, which resulted in the cluster moving to the 88th fastest computer in the world according to the 21st TOP500 list of June 2003.
The Space Simulator Cluster is dedicated to performing computational astrophysics simulations in the Theoretical Astrophysics group (T-6) at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

TOP500 Supercomputer Sites: TOP500 Supercomputer Sites
Although this looks a bit like a data base query, it is important to realise that we are locating information in documents, not in a relation database.
Although this is already very useful, combining information with information from other sources can make the TOP500 even more valuable.
In November we produced an XML-version of the TOP500 and showed that, by using stylesheets, this can be used to select and combine information from several lists easily.

Intel powers more TOP500 supercomputers The Register
The number of Intel systems in the TOP500 supercomputers more than doubled in the last six months from 56 to 119.
The overall growth in cluster systems reflects the increased importance of this class of system in the high performance computing market.
The total combined performance of all 500 computers on the list is 375 Tflop/s, compared to 293 Tflop/s just six months ago.

Supercomputers go even larger - ZDNet UK News
The Linpack measurement, by comparison, is more a reflection of processor speed and count, which isn't always a reflection of how well a computer can simulate, say, all the physics of a car crash.
For IBM, newer p690 systems using Big Blue's Power4 processor are beginning to encroach on the numerous earlier Power3-based servers.
IBM dominates when it comes to systems -- called "Beowulf" supercomputers -- based on this latter approach.

HOISe - News on HPCN Europe and the European Commission
More than half of the 500 fastest supercomputers in the world are now based on Intel Itanium or Xeon processors.
The respectable newspaper "Die Zeit" did have a full page on the Earth Simulator, which it calls the "Mother of all computers" (Mutter aller Rechner and the probable next number 1, the Bluegene).
Designing a balanced supercomputer for scientific applications, however, is not easy.

 Prometeus - Background
In the TOP500 the most powerful computers in the world are listed ranked by their performance on the Linpack Benchmark.
In 1986, he became co-founder and organizer of the first Mannheim Super Computer Seminar, which has been held annually ever since.
In 1993, Hans Meuer started the TOP500 initiative together with Erich Strohmaier (previously at the University of Mannheim, currently at the NERSC) and Jack Dongarra (University of Tennessee and ORNL).

HP News Release: HP Powers More TOP500 Supercomputers Than Any Other Company
"HP's continued No. 1 position on the TOP500 list highlights our sustained leadership in the high-performance computing space and validates our ability to offer technical and commercial customers the most robust portfolio of servers to meet their ever increasing supercomputing needs," said Winston Prather, vice president and general manager, HP High Performance Technical Computing Division.
With 159 entries, representing more than 30 percent of the posted sites, HP has more installations on the TOP500 list than any other technology supplier.
The list ranks supercomputers worldwide based on the Linpack Benchmark, a yardstick of performance that is a reflection of processor speed and scalability.
