Tagged Image File Format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TIFF is a flexible and adaptable file format.
TIFF format is widely supported by image-manipulation applications such as Photoshop by Adobe, GIMP, and Paint Shop Pro by Jasc, by desktop publishing and page layout applications, such as QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign, and by scanning, faxing, word processing, optical character recognition, and other applications.
TIFF was originally created as an attempt to get desktop scanner vendors of the mid-1980's to agree on a common scanned image file format, rather than have each company promulgate its own proprietary format.

GeoTIFF - A standard image file format for GIS applications
A GeoTIFF file is a TIFF 6.0 file, and inherits the file structure as described in the corresponding portion of the TIFF spec.
The TIFF file begins with an 8-byte header, which gives basic information about the file such as byte order (Little Endian or Big Endian), TIFF file ID or Version Number (which is always 42) and a pointer to first IFD.
A Key works with formatted tag-values of a TIFF file the way that a TIFF file deals with the raw bytes of a data file.

 The Unofficial TIFF Home Page
TIFF uses 4-byte integer file offsets to store image data, with the consequence that a TIFF file cannot have more than 4 Gigabytes of raster data (and some files have begun to approach this boundary).
TIFF was developed by Aldus and Microsoft Corp, and the specification was owned by Aldus, which in turn merged with Adobe Systems, Incorporated.
For example the TIFF format permits both MSB ("Motorola") and LSB ("Intel") byte order data to be stored, with a header item indicating which order is used.

The exception is when a PNM program "promotes" a file to a higher format, and it lets you know about this.
The parts are upwards compatible: PGM programs can read both PGM and PBM files, but always write PGM; PPM programs can read all three and always write PPM; and PNM programs read all three and write, generally, the same type as they read.

This graphics file format was designed to be the universal translator of the graphics world back in the 1980s when sharing graphics across computing platforms was a great headache.
Like any standards, however, the TIFF developed a few inconsistencies along the way: some graphical software companies estimate that there are more than 50 variations on the TIFF format.
TIFF can handle color depths ranging from one-bit (black and white) to 24-bit photographic images with equal ease.
