Teleprinter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The paper tape function was sometimes used to prepare input for the computer session offline, or to capture computer output.
Teletypes with 4 row keyboards and ASCII code with upper and lower case letters were an innovation that came into use in the same period as computers began to become widely available.
Now any personal computer equipped with a serial port can emulate the functionality of a Teletype.

 Teletype ASR 33
Indeed it is seen that the machine on the card - an ASR32 - uses narrower paper tape than the 7 and 8 channel versions customary in computing (5-channel tape was used in some early computers, though; an example being the Dutch Zebra).
This machine, made by the Teletype Corporation, was probably the most widespread computer terminal ever (maybe except the VT100 series terminals from Digital Equipment Corp.).
The ASR33 has an integrated papertape reader and puncher for off-line data preparation and storage.

 Heavy Metal Teletype Program
Heavy Metal is a free program that allows you to connect a Teletype machine to your computer's serial port in general, and the internet in particular.
In truth, you don't actually need a teletype machine to use the program, but it would be kind of silly to do so.
Convert ASCII files on your computer to 5 and 6-level codes, and print them out on your teletype.

 PalmFLYING.com TeleType GPS
However, my TeleType software constantly locks up, requiring cold restarts, has inaccurate information in the database, and the company initially didn't even understand basic aviation terms (they've fixed some of those errors since I pointed out to them that BRG and HDG are two different things, for example).
TeleType's upgrade procedures are, by far, the worst I've ever encountered for any piece of software.
It may not yet have all the features of TeleType, but at least it never locks up enroute, and the authors are responsive and helpful.

Teletype made the Model 29, which was an eight-level four-row machine working on one of the IBM BCD codes.
If you wanted to use the same kind of Teletype machine to talk to a computer, well that was another matter entirely.
I believe this was used only internally in Western Electric; AT&T was scared to put an IBM coded machine out to the public lest non-IBM computer makers complain that the AT&T giant was favoring the IBM giant at their expense.
