Thin client - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thin client hardware, whether dedicated or simply older hardware that has been repurposed via cascading, is useless or of little interest outside a client-server environment.
A thin client is a computer (client) in client-server architecture networks which has little or no application logic, so it has to depend primarily on the central server for processing activities.
A thin client does most of its processing on a central server with as little hardware and software as possible at the user's location, and as much as possible at some centralized managed site.

NCTE (National Centre for Technology in Education) - Thin Client Networks
A thin client network operates by concentrating computing power on a central server, with 'client' machines (i.e., computers connected to the network) doing much less work locally.
There are a number of devices that can function as clients, but from a school's perspective, desktop computers are the most familiar type of device.
Older, 'outdated' machines are ideally suited for use as client devices, as their low-end specifications do not directly affect their ability to run more sophisticated software programs.
