Throughput - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In information technology, throughput is the rate at which a computer or network sends or receives data.
Mathematically, the maximum digital throughput for a given analog bandwidth and noise level is determined by the Shannon-Hartley theorem.
It is also called channel capacity in telecommunications contexts, and is usually measured in bits or bytes per second.

Measuring data throughput - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When calculating or estimating data throughputs, the details of the frame/cell/packet format and the technology's detailed implementation need to be understood.
The throughput is then calculated by dividing the file size by the time to get the throughput in megabits, kilobits, or bits per second.
As if this is not confusing enough, when referring to a data throughput of one kilobit per second (1 kbit/s), analysts generally mean 1,000 bits per second (10^3 bit/s), but when talking about one kilobyte (1 KB) of data storage, they usually mean 1,024 bytes (2^10 Bytes).

 Define throughput - a Whatis.com definition
1) In computer technology, throughput is the amount of work that a computer can do in a given time period.
Historically, throughput has been a measure of the comparative effectiveness of large commercial computers that run many programs concurrently.
Another measure of computer productivity is performance, the speed with which one or a set of batch programs run with a certain workload or how many interactive user requests are being handled with what responsiveness.

 High Throughput Computing
In other words, most scientists are concerned with how many floating point operation per month or per year they can extract from their computing environment rather than the number of such operations the environment can provide them per second or minute.
We refer to such environments as High Throughput Computing (HTC) environments.
For more than a decade, the Condor team at the Computer Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been developing and evaluating mechanisms and policies that support HTC on large collections of distributively owned heterogeneous computing resources.

This document's goal is to explain how to optimize throughput and availability in a data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) environment, as well as the inherent protocol limitations that affect performance.
A nibble is defined as a 4-bit word, which is half a byte.
This will cause worse problems with throughput quality than errors that are spread out from thermal noise.

Tuning Garbage Collection with the 1.4.2 Java[tm] Virtual Machine
Since collections occur when generations fill up, throughput is inversely proportional to the amount of memory available.
For this reason the virtual machine's default garbage collectior may not be optimal, and may be overridden by the user in the form of command line options, described below.
But for applications needing the largest possible heap, an eden bigger than half the virtually committed size of the heap is useless: only major collections would occur.

Once lower-level controls are operating optimally, you can increase throughput even more by using PlantWeb's integrated Advanced Process Control to further reduce variability and move setpoints closer to optimum.
It also makes it easy to combine optimization with advanced control — the first to calculate the new operating setpoints for optimizing throughput or other goals, and the second to implement them.
PlantWeb's top-to-bottom information integration means the optimization program can use data from throughout the architecture, including validated device-level information about what's happening in the plant and process.

 Improved Throughput Performance
Individual session throughput, once considered a disadvantage of high latency TCP/IP links, can now be mitigated through the correct use of new protocol enhancement technologies.
Link compression is made possible by compressing both TCP/IP header bytes, and payload bytes, and can provide typical throughput increases of up to 250%, depending on the content.
The ack-nak is included to make sure that all packets are received correctly, and to request a retransmission if an error is detected.

 Hardware - G5 Performance Programming
Normally on any computer, we'd expect that the L1 to register throughput would be many times greater than its front side bus performance.
In comparison, the G5 front side bus (the data path between the memory controller and the processor) on a 2 GHz G5 operates at 1 GHz and can transfer 4 bytes per beat in each direction.
Most functions load and store data, so this is a probably a better thing to look at.
