Trivial File Transfer Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
TFTP was therefore useful for booting computers such as routers which did not have any mass storage devices.
Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) is a very simple file transfer protocol, with the functionality of a very basic form of FTP; it was first defined in 1980.
In binary image mode the file is moved literally, byte by byte.

TFTP - Trivial File Transfer Protocol
TFTP is often used to transfer firmware and configuration information from a UNIX computer acting as a TFTP server to an IP networking device, such as the Netopia ISDN Router.

The file name is a sequence of bytes in netascii terminated by a zero byte.
Since Datagram is implemented on the Internet protocol, packets will have an Internet header, a Datagram header, and a TFTP header.

 Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP)
As it is a UDP protocol, it is referred to as an unreliable protocol because it does not verify that the various parts of the file arrived intact.
Trival file transfer is used by Cisco routers to download their configuration files and by Sun Sparc workstations during the Jumpstart process.

 Trivial File Transfer Protocol
TFTP itself was designed to be a very simple way to transfer files between machines, because it was designed to be so very simple the things that is does in terms of maintaining security can be summed up in two words: "almost nothing".
Since TFTP is implemented using IP, the computer using TFTP must be capable of receiving IP packets of up to 524 bytes in length (excluding IP header information), since TFTP data packets are 516 bytes long, and UDP headers are 8 bytes long.
One drawback of TFTP is the fact that it is a relatively slow protocol; however, speed is often not a major issue when bootstrapping a computer.

TFTP (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) (Linktionary term)
TFTP is defined in RFC 1350 (The TFTP Protocol, July 1992).
TFTP is an Internet file transfer protocol similar to FTP (File Transfer Protocol), but it is scaled back in functionality so that it requires fewer resources to run.
TFTP also differs from FTP in that it only supports file transfers and does not have the user interface features that FTP has.

 TFTP: Trivial File Transfer Protocol
TFTP is a much simpler protocol for transferring files between machines.
One use of TFTP is when a machine boots up and needs to get a file from another machine (e.g., the Axil stations in the JCT UNIX lab).

Chapter 15. TFTP: Trivial File Transfer Protocol
Unlike the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), which we describe in Chapter 27 and which uses TCP, TFTP was designed to use UDP, to make it simple and small.
Chapter 27 covers the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), which is designed for general purpose, high-throughput file transfer.
For additional security, the TFTP server on a Unix system normally sets its user ID and group ID to values that should not be assigned to any real user.

The TCP/IP Guide - Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP)
It is ideal as a general purpose protocol for file transfer between computers, but on certain types of hardware, it is too complex to easily implement, and provides more capabilities than are really needed.
In cases where only the most basic file transfer functions are needed and simplicity and small program size is of paramount importance, a companion to FTP was created called the Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP).
