Urpmi -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article
urpmi is a (additional info and facts about Mandrake Linux) Mandrake Linux (additional info and facts about package management) package management tool for installing, removing, updating and querying software packages of local or remote (networked) media.
It wraps around the package manager (Rate of revolution of a motor) rpm with the aim that the user should not have to suffer the often-encountered (additional info and facts about dependency hell) dependency hell.

 URPMI - LinuxQuestions.org Wiki
urpmq is a tool(part of urpm) which queries the urpmi database for packages.
urpmi is an rpm wrapper which makes installation of rpm files easier for the user.
If the dependencies are not installed (or if they are not the latest version), urpmi then presents the dependencies along with and their total size to the user and asks if they want to continue, installing (and its dependencies).

LWN: A Quick Reference Guide to urpmi
But despite urpmi being Free Software, it did not find its way into any other distribution, and even those that were originally derived from Mandrake (such as Alt Linux or PCLinuxOS) have been quick to replace urpmi with one of the apt ports for RPM-based distributions.
Besides these basic functions, urpmi is also capable of upgrading or removing packages, displaying information about packages and searching the package database.
In cases where the specified doesn't exist, urpmi will attempt to find a package with a similar name, so even typing errors are taken care of.

Urpmi can also be used to upgrade your box to the a newer version of Mandriva Linux.
As with urpmi, it works out the dependancies and tells you if any software that's still installed depends on what you want to uninstall, giving you the chance to abort the procedure or to uninstall the package and those that depend on it.
Where possible, you should use urpmi to install software, using packages from the correct urpmi source for your current version of Mandriva Linux.

Urpmi requires you to setup sources, which are basically links to repositories of software packages either locally or on the internet.
When you setup up your sources, urpmi automatically caches a list of the packages available at that source, and their versions.
The easiest way to do this is to use a tool on the internet called Easy Urpmi.

URPMI works by maintaining a local index of all packages available on remote locations.
Each URPMI repository contains a whole bunch of packages and an index file; URPMI needs to know where both are.

For those of your who don't know urpmi is the Mandrake version of Redhats Package Manager (rpm) but with advanced dependency features more similar to Debians apt-get (can be configured to pull from net, and can be updated with new sources).
(btw, urpmi is great, but using rpmdrake is probably better since it give you a little more information about things your installing and show version numbers where multiple packages are available) One thing to note is that Thac has set it up so you can install parts without them including necessarily everything.
If you do use urpmi with these sources, run “urpmi.update *” from time to time to update your data base.

The patch uses/requires the 'urpmi' and 'URPM' perl modules, which are available on Mandrake systems as 'urpmi-*.rpm' and 'perl-URPM-*.rpm' respectively.
