VAX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VAX computer systems can run several operating systems, usually BSD UNIX or DEC's VMS, Ultrix, VAXeln (but even Linux, NetBSD, and OpenBSD are running on some VAX-based computers nowadays).
VAX is a 32-bit computing architecture that supports an orthogonal instruction set (machine language) and virtual addressing (i.e.
Early versions of the VAX processor implemented a "compatibility mode" that emulated many of the PDP-11's instructions, and were in fact called VAX-11 to highlight this compatibility and the fact that VAX-11 was an outgrowth of the PDP-11 family.

OpenVMS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the port from VAX to Alpha, in which a "snapshot" of the VAX code base circa V5.4 was used as the basis for the Alpha release and the source code then largely diverged, the OpenVMS Alpha and I64 (Itanium) versions of OpenVMS are built and maintained using a common source code pool and tools.
The Star and Starlet projects culminated in the VAX 11/780 computer and the VAX-11/VMS operating system.
OpenVMS (Open Virtual Memory System or just VMS) is the name of a high-end computer server operating system that runs on the VAX and Alpha family of computers developed by Digital Equipment Corporation of Maynard, Massachusetts (now owned by Hewlett-Packard), and more recently on Hewlett-Packard systems built around Intel Itanium CPU.

VAX Systems: VAX to Alpha - Passing the Torch
All of this made VAX systems the first computer to combine the functionality, capacity, and performance of a mainframe with the interactive capabilities, flexibility, and price/performance of a minicomputer.
VAX systems have produced an enduring legacy, and the evolution of computer technology has validated the core vision behind them.
While the VAX 32-bit architecture was important, it was also the first time designers built hardware and software (VMS, later hp OpenVMS) together from the ground up, making the system tightly integrated and providing unprecedented levels of reliability, data integrity, scalability, and flexibility.

An image of each VAX disk is transferred to the emulated system, where the code executes as it would on the physical VAX.
The O/S, software applications, and data are then copied to the emulated VAX system.
VAX systems were supplanted by Alpha systems in the mid-1990's.
