This is a book about being an information designer: theories, ethics, political and cultural issues, etc. I agree, the visual design is less than eloquent: standard MIT Press "academic." But the writing is exciting, so long as you're not looking for a how-to book.
Information design is not about how rigidly organized the branching structure is; instead, it's about how the user "moves through" an application (hopefully with pleasure and ease of use).

 Computer Gaming World: Pinball Wizards
In 1985, Bill Budge, a game designer working for Electronic Arts, created the Pinball Construction Set, which allowed players to drag and drop pinball components on a virtual playfield.
While PCS wasn’t the first pinball simulation, it was the first that let users design and share tables.
Although the design is done in a strictly 2D environment, the program renders tables in full 3D, allowing for realistic physics using ramps and multilevel playfields.
