WYSIWYG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WYSIWYG (pronounced /wɪziwɪg/), an acronym for What You See Is What You Get, is used in computing to describe a system in which content during editing appears very similar to the final product.
The Alto monitor (72 pixels per inch) was designed so that one full page of text could be seen and then printed on the first laser printers.
After 3 years of publishing, the newsletter was sold to employees at the Stanford Research Institute in California.

Talk:WYSIWYG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In my personal experience it is a lot easier to write an "almost WYSIWYG" program than a program that is not WYSIWYG at all, since it saves you the trouble of writing the drawing code again for the printer.
Now I'm really wondering what makes WYSIWYG such a tempting target for trolls and vandals...in a way, I can understand why the article on Adolf Hitler, for example, is constantly vandalized, but with this article, I have to admit I just don't get it...
The primary goal of such a program is not to layout and format a document, but to generate a tax-return form based upon user input.

 WYSIWYG Editors And Bad Markup
WYSIWYG editors also rarely distinguish between images that are decorative versus images that are informative, leading to distortions in the meaning of content.
Many WYSIWYG editors also make the mistake of considering alt text and "tooltip" to be interchangeable, which they are not.
Below is an example of a data table, where the data in the table can only be understood in relation to column and/ or row headers.

 R.I.P. WYSIWYG - Results-Oriented UI Coming (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)
WYSIWYG was a great advance over earlier interactions, in which users specified their goals more abstractly and didn't see the results until far later.
Obviously, WYSIWYG was a great usability advance, as was the entire Mac-like GUI, which is why it survived for so long.
Next Generation: Results-Oriented UI The next version of Microsoft Office (Office 2007, code-named "Office 12") will be based on a new interaction paradigm called the results-oriented user interface.

 Urban Dictionary: WYSIWYG
WYSIWYG, "What You See is What You Get," was originally used in the early days of word processing software to indicate the way in which a document would appear on-screen or in print.
With the creation of WYSIWYG word processors, users could see exactly the way a document would look on-screen or in print while editing it.
Most programs are not truly WYSIWYG since printing and page formatting are still hidden from view.

 R.I.P. WYSIWYG
Uh, this guy totally misuses the term WYSIWYG, which was never meant to refer to the interface for doing something, but rather the display of what's being done, so that it matches what the end-user will see — whether it be in print or on the Web.
His little "declare it to make it so" article confuses (whether deliberately or not) WYSIWYG (which has everything to do with edited content [what you see] and how it maps to final product [what you get]) with the noun-verb (target-action) paradigm of most of today's GUIs (the 'how you edit that content' part).
Now, MS comes out with this new "paradigm." WYSIWYG is old hat; "Results-oriented UI" is what you should use.

Dan's Web Tips: Cleaning Up After WYSIWYG Editors
Since WYSIWYG editors create HTML code based on the visual appearance of the document rather than its logical structure (even though HTML is a markup language intended to represent logical structure), it's likely to fail to "get the point" of your document's structure and mark it up logically.
In the main menu of this site, I refer to WYSIWYG editors as "not very well housebroken." This implicit comparison of these programs to dogs is actually not particularly fair to the canine population; in fact, dogs are quite fussy about where they poop, while WYSIWYG editors don't appear to show this degree of discretion.
It also puts all the graphics for each page in their own subdirectories (possibly creating many copies of a single graphic that's used in multiple places), and defaults to using really messy filenames taken from the page titles which usually have characters like spaces in them which are illegal in URLs.

 WYSIWYG Visual Editor FAQ
Now cross-platform WYSIWYG editing is possible using the Mozilla 1.1 browser (for Windows, Mac, Linux, Sun, etc.), which leverages the Composer visual editing long familiar to Netscape browser users (since Navigator Gold in Netscape 3).
Until recently, cross-platform WYSIWYG visual editing in the browser has only been available from Java-based solutions, most of them closed, proprietary, and expensive.
The reasons behind its relative poor performance are traceable to problems inherent in the browsers themselves, problems that cause the same web page to look different in different browsers.

A WYSIWYG editor can be contrasted with more traditional editors that require the developer to enter descriptive codes (or markup) and do not permit an immediate way to see the results of the markup.
