X Window System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, the X Window System (commonly X11 or X) is a windowing system for bitmap displays.
In 1987, with the success of X11 becoming apparent, MIT wished to relinquish the stewardship of X, but at a June 1987 meeting with nine vendors, the vendors told them they believed that a neutral party was required to keep X from fragmenting in the marketplace.
In January 1988, the MIT X Consortium was formed as a non-profit vendor group, with Scheifler as director, to direct the future development of X in a neutral atmosphere inclusive of commercial and educational interests.

 Mac Help -- X11
X11 is maintained by X.org (not Apple Computer).
The X11 user interface allows users to run applications on one computer, but display the graphical interface on a different computer.
X11 is the interface used on Unix style computers like Sun Solaris, all BSD variants, Linux, SGI's Irix, OS/2, and Cygwin.

 X11: Apple's secret formula CNET News.com
X11 provides a windowing environment that lets Unix programs run on Mac OS X essentially the same way they do on their native operating systems.
For example, copy and paste between applications for X11 and Mac OS X's "Aqua" user interface is now possible with the regular keyboard shortcuts, and programs may be minimized to the dock.
Also, X11 running on OS X gives Unix users a portable option they might not have with Unix.

Apple (UK and Ireland) - Mac OS X - X11
X11 for Mac OS X gives you a complete, rootless X11R6.6 implementation, as well as display server and client libraries — plus headers in the SDK.
With the complete suite of the standard X11 display server software, client libraries and developer toolkits, X11 for Mac OS X makes it even simpler to port Linux and Unix applications to the Mac.
Beneath the surface of Mac OS X lies an industrial-strength UNIX foundation hard at work to ensure that your computing experience remains free of system crashes and compromised performance.

 X11 Tutorial
Almost all workstation vendors have adopted X11 as their windowing system, though many vendors still have proprietary extensions built into the X servers shipped with their hardware.
Writing an non-trivial X11 based program with a graphical user interface is not easy.
The X Toolkit developed at MIT and distributed with X11.

 QA1232 - X11 FAQ
Q: What is the X Window System (X11) for Mac OS X? A: X11 for Mac OS X is an implementation of the X Window System that makes it possible to run X11-based applications in Mac OS X. See www.apple.com/macosx/features/x11 for more information.
Q: Where is the source code to X11 for Mac OS X? A: Yes, the source code for the X11 server is available from the Darwin site.
A: Bug reports and feature requests related to X11 for Mac OS X can and should be filed at developer.apple.com/bugreporter.

 The Labs: X11 Lab
Under X11 the window-management is implemented apart from the core:
There are several insufficiencies to be admited about X11: As per X11R6 there is still no native antialiasing font-support, neither alpha blending of windows.
VNC by ATT/UK has developed VNC-servers & clients for X11, in other words you can run X11 server(s) on your machine and test applications and or window-managers; X11 within X11.

BetaNews Apple Bridges OS X and Linux with X11 Beta
The X11 for Mac OS X public beta includes a window server, libraries and basic utilities such as xterm.
January 8, 2003, 7:55 PM One of the quieter announcements coming out of this week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco is the beta release of X11 for Mac OS X. Based on XFree86 4.2.1, X11 for Mac OS X provides the same windowing environment used by a myriad of Linux and UNIX applications.
X11 on OSX will allow Linux and Unix apps to run on OSX with minimal porting, it will (if it performs as advertised) run these apps faster then on Unix/Linux to boot.

 MacDevCenter.com: Hands on X11
X11 includes a window server, libraries, and basic utilities such as xterm.
In fact, it is a full distribution of XFree86 4.2.1, and includes all of the standard X11 programs and utilities.
These environment variables are what tells the system where to look for X11 applications, and how and where to display them.

You can safely install both OpenOffice.org Mac OS X (X11) and NeoOffice/J side-by-side on the same computer, so feel free to download both and determine which is the better fit for your individual needs.
The OpenOffice.org installer includes the open source XFree86 4.3 X11 windowing system and offers a choice of window managers (how the windows look).

So the Fink development team ported dpkg and apt-get from Debian; X on X implemented an X window system; X11 binaries for Darwin (Apple's open-source BSD-derived base code for OS X) were made available by the XFree86 project.
But for UNIX folks using the OS, certain components were missing or incomplete.

MacDevCenter.com: X11 and OpenOffice on Mac OS X
Apple recently released X11 for Mac OS X. It's the X Windows System that allows programmers to build graphical Unix-based applications and is based on the open source XFree86 project.
My only complaint is that I didn't discover this gem of an application suite earlier enough; I had just paid for a Microsoft Office license for Mac OS X! Wei-Meng Lee, http://weimenglee.blogspot.com, is a technologist and founder of Developer Learning Solutions, a technology company specializing in hands-on training on the latest Microsoft technologies.
This is alright; you just need to inform it that X11 is now your X Windows.

 Fink - Running X11 - Installing X11
If you have already installed one of the Fink X11 packages but for one reason or another have decided you need to remove one and replace it with another, the procedure is pretty straightforward.
To use the Apple binaries, you need to make sure the X11 User package is installed, and you should also update Fink.
This frequently means that if you try to downgrade your X11 installation, you will find that binaries (executable programs, etc.) won't work anymore.

 X11 & TrueType fonts
For those with older X11 versions, and not willing to recompile X11, an easy and quick solution is to convert TrueType fonts to X11 bitmap fonts.
Usually, X11 fonts contain fonts in size 8.
Recent versions of X11 have TrueType support build in.

Unicode fonts and tools for X11
I have also made them available to X.Org for inclusion into one of the next official X11 distributions as a replacement for the current ISO 8859-1 BDF fonts (hopefully they will be in X11R6.7).
The BDF format used by X11 pixel fonts does not have any standardized way of including a character/glyph mapping table, and neither do current BDF editors such as xmbdfed or X servers.
The copyright status of these fonts remains the same as for the original fonts in the X11 distribution, therefore any X11 server vendors are welcome to include them into their products without payment of royalties.

Mac OS X: Using Apple's X11 public beta with IDL
The public beta of X11 for Mac OS X is available as a free download; the final version should be available later in 2003.
Additionally, Mac OS X 10.3 contains an integrated and more polished version of the X11 environment than what was released in the public X11 Beta.
The X11 final release contained in Mac OS X 10.3 also addresses the X11 Beta color problems described below.

XDarwin is X11 for MacOS X
In keeping with the efforts for the XDarwin project to remain open source (in contrast to Apple's X11 release) Christos Zaoulas, James Whitwell, and Emmanuel Dreyfus have accomplished a milestone in their development efforts toward Mac-compatible IOKit driver emulation.
He describes both the challenges he faced and some suggestions as to the best order in which to install the various components necessary to run GNOME and KDE environments on Mac OS X. His article is recommended reading for anyone who seeks to set up these environments along with the XDarwin forums discussions.
