XFree86 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
XFree86 is an implementation of the X Window System.
The XFree86 server communicates with the host operating system's kernel to drive input and output devices, with the exception of graphics cards.
It is developed by the XFree86 Project, Inc.; the lead developer is David Dawes.

 ISS X-Force Database: xfree86-fontalias-bo(15130): XFree86 font.alias file buffer overflow
XFree86 is an open-source implementation of the X Window System for most Linux and Unix-based operating systems.
XFree86 versions 4.1.0 through 4.3.0 are vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the font.alias file, caused by improper bounds checking of user-supplied input.
A local attacker could create a specially-crafted font.alias file to overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system.

 MacDevCenter.com: Installing XFree86 on Mac OS X
XFree86 is an open-source implementation of the X Window System GUI for Unix and Unix-like (Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris) operating systems.
As of this writing, the semi-current revision of XFree86 for Darwin and Mac OS X is available as a binary package from the Darwinfo site, X11R6-4.01.tar.gz.
What tips do you have for those who are about to install XFree86 on their Mac OS X computers?

 XFree86 Frequently Asked Questions
Starting with the 3.3.2 release the XFree86 X servers are installed without the set-uid bit set, and a small wrapper program ``Xwrapper'' which is installed set-uid root is used to start the X server after checking the command line and environment.
The file being referred to is included in the Xlib.tgz part of the XFree86 binary distributions produced by The XFree86 Project.
In general, The XFree86 Project is not publishing benchmark comparisons, because even if you think that a number like 'xstones' can capture the performance of a card, it is incredibly hard to create fair and comparable numbers.

 XFree86 on Solaris
This section assumes that you are installing Xfree86 for the first time, if you are upgrading an existing copy please refer to the release notes for further instructions.
The program will next check that you have the directory /usr/X11R6 (the standard installation directory) on your system and tell you that it needs to be in your PATH environment variable.
The XFree86 Project has traditionally focused on Intel x86-based platforms, but current releases also support other platforms.

 FileForum XFree86
It is the underlying software that is between the hardware and graphical user interface (aka gui) that people see and use.
With 4.x, upgrades to the X server with new and unsupported hardware can be easily done and installed without undergoing the previous process of rebuilding an X server.
A new X.org open source project was created that continues development with a far more efficient organization that in a short period of time has brought real progress, while XFree86 has long been known to move along much slower than most people want.

 S3 Savage support on XFree86 4.x
I have been assured that XFree86 drivers are operating system independent.
XFree86 4.x will always use the XF86Config-4 file if it is present, otherwise it looks for XF86Config.
Rearranged the memory mapping and unmapping; a fix adopted by XFree86 seems to break kdm and switch to VTs.

Most of these are summarized in the XFree86 CHANGELOG (found in the unbundled tree, xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86).

NewsForge Some X.org and Xfree86 developers now working together as a single group
There was speculation that XFree86 development might cease or be crippled, and that freedesktop.org might somehow replace X. What has really happened is that X.org development is now taking place under the aegis of freedesktop.org, specifically at www.freedesktop.org/Software/xorg.
Jim Gettys, a developer one colleague said "has been part of the X consortium almost since before there was an X Window project," said the project restructuring's main goal was "rebuilding the vibrant community we had in the early years."
Havoc Pennington pointed out that freedesktop.org is not, itself, a development project.

Sub-Pixel Font Positioning on UNIX mini-HOWTO
Thanks to work by Keith Packard, XFree86 4 now includes Xft and Render, two extensions to the X display protocol which allow use of sub-pixel rendering.
That will be integrated into the XFree86 CVS tree after 4.2 stablizes; the existing Xft library will remain in place for backwards compatibility." With CB's support, this should make it into the Moz mainline.
If you're not using the most recent version of XFree86, it's definitely work upgrading; more and more hardware is gaining Render support with each release.

XFree86 gets underwhelmed by Linux distro support
That probably makes business sense for the vendors given that X.Org is a vendor-oriented organization sponsored by hardware and software companies, while XFree86 is an independent group of volunteer developers.
Asked what the rejections by distros Red Hat, Mandrake, Debian, and now SuSE meant for Xfree86's future, project leader David Dawes told The INQUIRER he is "indifferent to the business decisions of these vendors".
He continued by saying: "I think this provides a good opportunity for XFree86 to cut out the middle-man, and go back to a stronger emphasis on providing our software directly to the end user as we did in the early days."

While we will attempt to provide backward compatibil- ity for the module interfaces as of the 4.0 release (meaning that 4.0 modules will work with future core X server binaries), we cannot guarantee this.
Using simple compositing operators provided by most hardware, Render can draw anti-aliased text and geometric objects as well as perform translucent image overlays and other image operations not possible with the core X rendering system.
Not all of the hardware drivers from 3.3.x have been ported to 4.x yet, but conversely, 4.x has some hardware support not present in 3.3.x.

FreeBSD: Several 'XFree86' ports vulnerabilities - The Community's Center for Security
Note that any statically linked binaries which make use of the vulnerable XFree86 routines may still be vulnerable to the problems after deinstallation of the port/package.
The XFree86-aoutlibs port contains the XFree86 libraries from the 3.3.3 release of XFree86, in a.out format suitable for use with applications in the legacy a.out binaryformat, most notably being the FreeBSD native version of Netscape.
However due to the difficulty of developing a reliable scanning utility for such binaries no such utility is provided.

LinuxPlanet - Tutorials - New HOWTO: XFree86 Font Deuglification Mini HOWTO - Table of Contents, Section 1
Introduction One of the most annoying sets of problems I have had to deal with is the abysmal default fonts and font settings of X (I'm talking specifically about [http://www.xfree.org] XFree86, other versions of X may be better.) Many programs use fixed width default fonts when a variable width font would be more appropriate.
It does come with a halfway decent courier font, but its Times and Helvetica fonts are simple bitmap fonts that pixelize when they are scaled.

Using XFree86 4.x in a Linux Virtual Machine
The drivers in XFree86 4.x are separate modules that are loaded dynamically by the main X server binary.
This is a bug in XFree86 version 4.0.1a when it is run in the presence of an ISA video card.
Early distributions of the XFree86 4.x X server do not work properly inside a virtual machine created by any VMware product because they do not include an SVGA driver for the VMware virtual video adapter.

 XFree86 -- new license
Red Hat is a strong supporter of open source software and technologies, and the new XFree86 license seems to be intended to restricting existing freedom for no real world technical or other gains.
I very much look forward to working together in collaboration with yourself, the Debian project, FreeBSD, Mandrake, SuSE, X.org foundation, the other BSDs, and any/all other interested parties on a true open source solution for the needs of X11 users and developers.
X11 has sorely lacked such an open and collaborative development environment for a very long time.

Multiple local XFree users under Linux
Although I would love to see XFree86 supporting simultaneous layouts (without another instance) and a brand new keyboard driver, I don't have the necessary understanding of the project to implement it by myself.
In normal conditions, we both couldn't use the computer at the same time, in spite of the fact that it usually has a lot of processing power available.
And it has to be on Linux, because no closed source OS would allow me to make the changes that I need.

 Getting Started
If you don't feel the need to live on the cutting edge, you can save some time and effort by using the precompiled binaries available from the XFree86 Project.
So far it probably isn't very impressive as you might not even have a window manager running to allow you to move windows around.
There is a lot you can do to control how your windows look, how the windows are moved, resized, etc. You will likely want to get a better window manager than twm, which is included with XFree86.
