ZIP (file format) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, in practice, ZIP is almost always used with Katz's DEFLATE algorithm.
Some software uses the ZIP file format as a wrapper for a large number of small items.
Typically, in any modern file manager, a ZIP file may be treated as a directory or folder, so that files are copied into and out of it in the same manner as any other folder; the compression is handled in a way that is largely transparent to the end user.

Jar (file format) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, a Jar file (short for Java archive) is a ZIP file used to distribute a set of Java classes.
Jar files which are intended to be executed as standalone programs will have one of their classes specified as the "main" class.
Jar files can be obfuscated so that a user of the jar file doesn't get much information regarding the code it contains.

 zziplib - ZIP Format
The zip directory entry has one value that is called z_off in the zziplib sources - it's the seek value to the start of the actual file data, or more correctly it points to the "local file header".
It is quite common to read data entries sequentially, as that the zip directory is scanned for files matching a specific pattern, and when a match is seen, that file is openened.
The general ZIP file format is written sequentially - each file being added gets a local file header and its inflated data.

WinZip® - Increased Zip File Capacity
The original Zip file format limited the number of member files in a Zip file to 65,535, and the maximum size of both the Zip file itself and any member file to 4 gigabytes.
Using the extended format, the member file size, Zip file size, and number of member files you can add to a Zip file are limited only by your system's resources.
Note: Zip files that are created using the 64-bit Zip file extensions require a Zip utility, such as WinZip, that supports this format in order to open these Zip files.

ZIP File Format - File Extensions
ZIP files are used often in DOS/Windows environments.
After the ZIP file is transferred, the recipient takes the ZIP file and "unzips" it, causing the original files to appear on their hard drive.
ZIP files must be created with a ZIP file creation tool.

 Polar ZIP component - FAQ
ZIP files are archives used for distributing and storing files.
Two benefits of using archives for electronic file distribution are that only one file transfer operation (download) is required to obtain all related files, and file transfer time is minimized because the files in an archive are compressed.
Rather than distributing individual files, it is often easier to distribute the files as an archive to benefit from the file grouping and compression.

Learnthat.com What is the ZIP File Format? ZIP File Format (.zip) Definition
ZIP is a file format where the files are compressed (referred to as "zipped).
Using a file compression program (such as PKZip for DOS, or Winzip for Windows), a zip file could be created from one or more original files.

You can think of a Zip file as a stream oriented format, which means you can create an archive by writing sequentially without ever having to seek backwards in the output file.
First of all, it is far too easy to create Zip files that are going to be unusable by other programs.
The data descriptor contains the file’s CRC and compressed size, which are frequently not available when writing the local file header.

Information on how OpenOffice uses XML, including the file formats, can be found at the XML project page which links to details and DTDs of the file formats, a discussion of the choices behind the package formats, and more.
Unfortunately, this file is a bit too cluttered with elements for casual viewing in a text editor, but you can extract the character data using many common XML tools, including XSLT, courtesy of the null style sheet (see Listing 2).
Be warned that to process these files with general XML tools, you either have to use a catalog for resolving the public ID, copy the Manifest.dtd file specified as the system ID to the same directory, or just use tools that do not read the external DTD subset.

You must be mistakenly transferring the zip files in ASCII mode, which was the reason you saw your files corrupted on the destination computer.
Now the difference between the two types is that the file transfer process includes a translation on the contents of the files of ascii type and no translation of the files of binary type.
The ascii files are simple text files such as email, files named with the.TXT extension, anything you can edit with a text editor.
