Topic: Null

 Null
In computer programming, null is a special value for a pointer (or reference) that is used to signify that the pointer's target is not a valid data element.
In a null cipher, most of the characters may be nulls.
Often, 0 (zero) is used as the null value, as most operating systems consider it an error to try to access such a low memory address.

 Null
NULL is defined in several ANSI headers as the symbolic constant (void *)0.
The null at the end can be coded by using the escape sequence '\0'.
A null character is used to terminate the string.

Null hypothesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A null hypothesis is only useful if it is possible to calculate the probability of observing a data set with particular parameters from it.
Null) approaches 0, in other words, we can reject the null when it's virtually certain to be true.
When a null hypothesis is formed, it is always in contrast to an implicit alternative hypothesis, which is accepted if the observed data values are sufficiently improbable under the null hypothesis.

Null character - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The null character (also null terminator) is a character with the value zero, present in the ASCII and Unicode character sets, and available in nearly all mainstream programming languages.
In null-terminated strings, the first occurring null character is interpreted as the end of the string.
Strings ending in a null character are said to be null-terminated.

 Interpreting Null Results
I prefer the terms null findings or null results to null effect as null effect suggests that there is no effect present whereas null findings or null results suggest that no effect was detected but may exist.
Null hypothesis significance testing do not allow for conclusions about the likelihood that the null hypothesis is true, only whether it is unlikely that null is true.
Support for the null hypothesis (e.g., accepting the null) is a tenuous proposition.

 PHP: NULL - Manual
The null type was introduced in PHP 4.
It treats NULL as the constant and unsets the variable.
So, in most cases I found that we needed to use !isset($var) intead of is_null($var) and then set $var = NULL if the variable needs to be used later to guarantee that $var is a valid variable with a NULL value instead of being undefined.

 AskTom "Null And Not Null"
NULLs are optional - NULLs are used to represent "i don't know" 0 is a value NULL is the absence of a value - it is "nothing" You can chose to use 0 with NOT NULL and default the column -- if it makes sense.
Another difference is that null is not included in an index.
However a not null, can use the index and not need to do a full scan.

 INF: BCP and NULL Values
The string "NULL" couldn't be properly written to the output file, because this would be a valid string, and upon input be loaded as the string "NULL," not the value NULL.
The only non-ambiguous way to represent NULL in character-mode BCP is by using two adjacent delimiters in a character-delimited file.
Although spaces in the input data file may seem to intuitively represent NULL, the ASCII space (0x20) is also a legitimate character, with possible significance.

 Statistics Glossary - hypothesis testing
If we do not reject the null hypothesis, it may still be false (a type II error) as the sample may not be big enough to identify the falseness of the null hypothesis (especially if the truth is very close to hypothesis).
Presumably, we would want to test the null hypothesis against the first alternative hypothesis since it would be useful to know if there is likely to be less than 50 matches, on average, in a box (no one would complain if they get the correct number of matches in a box or more).
